    Local roundup: Coast Guard women's basketball team halts Skidmore rally

    New London's Jacob Commander carries the ball against Westerly in the 14-and-under championship game for the Southern New England Youth Football Conference. New London defeated Westerly 36-33 in the game, played at Fitch High School.

    Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - Meghan Fornaro led the Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team with 16 points, six assists and six steals and the Bears held off a 14-0 second-half run by Skidmore to beat the Thoroughbreds 67-63 in the Skidmore Invitational Tournament.

    Alexi Howland added had 14 points, freshman Gill Gerton 11 and Dani Knox finished with 10 points for Coast Guard (1-1), while Torie Sutherland added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Fornaro was named to the all-tournament team.

    Coast Guard appeared to have the game in hand, leading 61-47 with 5 minutes, 57 seconds left before Skidmore exploded for 14 straight points to tie the game 61-61 with 2:43 remaining. Howland ended the drought for the Bears with a 3-pointer with 2:18 left giving the Bears a 64-61 lead.

    Skidmore trailed 65-63 and had the ball, but Sutherland had a steal with three seconds left and Howland made a pair of free throws with 0.8 seconds on the clock to seal the win for the Bears.

    Ledyard's Ari Fustini had two steals and a rebound for Skidmore (0-2).

    Men's basketball

    • Parris Hill scored a tournament-record 36 points to power Mitchell College to a 95-73 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in the consolation game of the Ramada Roundball Invitational hosted by the University of New England. Hill, who was named to the all-tournament team, was 16 of 27 from the floor, grabbed nine rebounds and added six steals. Donavan McClean contributed 30 points, making 13 of 24 from the floor, including 3 of 10 from 3-point range. He also added three of Mitchell's 19 steals. Devonta Mosley came off the bench to score 10 points. Mitchell (1-1) forced 30 Maine Maritime turnovers with a stifling fullcourt press, which led to 22 fastbreak points Maine Maritime is 0-2.

    • Lee Messier exploded for 20 points and five assists, being named to the all-tournament team as Connecticut College defeated Southern Maine 75-60 in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament in New London. Framingham State defeated Anna Maria 62-55 for the championship. Zuro Pavlin had 12 points and 16 rebounds for Conn (1-1), Isaiash Robinson had 11 points and eight rebounds and Bo McKinley finished with 10 points. Conn outrebounded Southern Maine 46-32. Pavlin was also named to the all-tournament team.

    • Ryan Funk had 24 points, including six 3-pointers, and five rebounds to lead St. Thomas More to an 80-52 victory over Jean-de-Brebeauf College of Canada. Steve Enoch added 10 points and six rebounds for St. Thomas More and Ian Gardener had a team-high eight rebounds.

    Men's hockey

    • Senior forward JC Cangelosi converted a pair of first-period goals to lead Conn College to a 5-2 victory over Wesleyan in a NESCAC matchup at Dayton Arena. Joe Giordano chipped in with a goal and an assist for Conn (1-1) and Jeff Celniker and Marc Roper also scored. Goalie Tom Conlin made 24 saves. Wesleyan is also 1-1.

    Women's hockey

    • Senior goaltender Kelsie Fralick made 31 saves to lead Conn College to a 2-1 victory over Trinity in a NESCAC matchup, putting Conn at 1-0-1 after a season-opening two-game series with the Bantams. All three goals were scored in the first 13:26, beginning with a power-play goal by Conn's Amelia Dineen just 3:09 into the game. Trinity's Lauren Fitzgerald answered 8:00 in, but Conn went ahead for good on a goal by Alexa de la Guardia with 6:34 remaining in the first period. The teams tied 2-2 Saturday.

    Men's cross country

    • Jonathan Lash missed earning All-New England honors by just one spot, placing 35th at the New England Division III meet at Williams College on Saturday. Lash finished the 8k course in 26:20 as the Bears placed 13th with 396 points. Also for Coast Guard, Zachary Velasquez was 46th (26:34), Caleb Teachout was 97th (27:25), Kevin Petow was 104th (27:30) and Joey O'Connell was 113th (27:35).

    Women's cross country

    • Coast Guard finished 20th in the New England Division III meet on Saturday at Williams, finishing with 602 points. Carolyn Smith led the Bears by placing 72nd in 23:40. She was followed by Bethany Gollin (92nd, 24:05), Jenn Haley (126th, 24:42), Andrea Barrameda (153rd, 25:04) and Rachel Burchill (159th, 25:08).

    Wrestling

    • Senior All-American Nate Giorgio won the 133-pound weight class Saturday, leading Coast Guard to a seventh-place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational. Giorgio won his first match with a pin in 3:33 after earning a first-round bye. He then registered a 13-5 major decision and a 23-7 technical fall to earn a spot in the championship match. He beat Paul Sughrue from Bridgewater State 5-0 for the title.

    Marc Wagner picked up two pins and a technical fall to earn a spot in the semifinals at 184, losing 6-4 in the semifinals. Wagner recorded his third pin to win the fifth-place match. Meanwhile, Mike Giorgio picked up three wins at 149, including a 5-0 victory in the fifth-place match. Matt McAllister placed sixth at 141 pounds, as he picked up four wins, three by major decision. Mark Howard won a pair of decisions and registered a pin to earn a spot in the heavyweight semifinals before being pinned by eventual champion Cody Lovejoy of Ohio Northern. He finished sixth.

    Women's swimming

    • Junior All-American Sam Pierce won three events Saturday to lead Connecticut College to a 153-127 victory against Middlebury College. Pierce won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.47), the 50 freestyle (25.22) and the 100 freestyle (54.45). Conn's Valerie Urban added wins in the 500 (5:15.76) and 1,000 (10:41.38). Sarah Nappo won the 100 backstroke (1:01.68) and 200 backstroke (2:14.28), Anna Peterson too the 200 butterfly (2:15.97) and Katie Edwards contributed a victory in her collegiate debut, posting a time of 2:31.95 in the 200 breaststroke. Nappo, Edwards, Peterson and Charlotte Nixon teamed to win the 200 medley relay in 1:49.72.

    H.S. swimming

    • Waterford senior Asia Langley was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.36 seconds) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (58.76) at the State Open on Saturday at Yale University. Fitch/St. Bernard's Meredith Hird was fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.27 and Waterford's Meika Gathy 10th in the 100 backstroke in 59.78. Darien won the team title with 510 points.
