Jerry Springer brings new dating show to UConn

TV show host Jerry Springer was on the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs Wednesday and it wasn't to find fodder for his very popular syndicated tabloid talk show, the "Jerry Springer Show."

It was to shoot promos and find prospective guests for his new dating show "Baggage on the Road."

The new game show which will air on the Game Show Network, is a spin-off of another Springer-hosted show called "Baggage."

"We taped 'Baggage' in Los Angeles for a few seasons but all we got were all these beautiful people who wanted to be movie stars," said Springer as he sipped tea at the on-campus Nathan Hale Inn early Wednesday morning. "The network approached me about doing this spin-off taking it on the road to college campuses and have real people on the show."

The show features a contestant and three potential partners who reveal secrets, flaws and other unknown baggage in their lives. Ultimately the partner that is chosen must then accept the contestant's own baggage to win a free date.

Springer, 70, started his day with a stroll to a somewhat nearby Starbuck's admitting that it was a longer walk and a lot colder than he had planned.

Staff was scurrying to find a parka and gloves for the former Cincinnatti mayor, lawyer and Emmy award-winning newscaster before he headed out on campus to shoot openings for the episodes that will feature Connecticut singles.

Actual interviews of candidates and filming of the episodes are scheduled to take place at the Palace Theater in Waterbury today and Friday, he said.

"I think these days everyone has baggage and everyone is willing to talk about it," said Springer about the new show. "Especially college students."
