Local roundup: Alvarez, Anderson lead Coast Guard men's hoop to win
New London -Junior Kevin Alvarez hit a game-winning basket from the corner with 12.9 seconds left as the Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team edged Roger Williams 55-54 in Wednesday's home opener.
Senior David Anderson made 8 of 12 shots and scored all of his game-high 21 points in the second half and added nine rebounds for Coast Guard (1-1). Alvarez made three 3-pointers and had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Coast Guard made 46.7 percent of its 3-pointers (7 of 15).
Ryan Palumbo had 15 points, four assists and four steals for Roger Williams (1-2).
Coast Guard is back in action at 7 p.m. Friday versus Framingham State in the Moe's Queso Classic at Regis College.
In other games:
• CJ Byrd had 14 points and six rebounds in St. Thomas More's 86-55 victory over Redemption Christian in Oakdale. Ryan Funk added 13 points and six rebounds and Christian Vital and Stephen Enoch had seven points each for St. Thomas More.
College volleyball
• Coast Guard Academy junior Ashley Dumont and freshman Michelle Hernandez earned spots on the AVCA Division III honorable mention All-American volleyball team. Hernandez is one of eight freshmen to receive that honor.
Both Bears also are first team All-New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference picks and New England AVCA Division II All-Region selections. They helped lead Coast Guard to a 19-12 overall record and a berth in the conference semifinals for the 14th straight season.
