Fire at Gales Ferry single-family home displaces 6

Ledyard — A fire at single-family home at 8 Merry Lane has temporarily displaced a family of six people.

Gales Ferry Fire Chief Anthony Saccone said the fire was reported at about 10:30 a.m. He said only one person was at home when the fire started. He said a total of two adults and four children live in the home.

Saccone said when fire crews arrived at the scene there was visible smoke coming from the garage and front door. The bulk of the fire, he said, was contained to the garage, but the fire did extend up to the attic and caused smoke damage to the living area.

Saccone said the American Red Cross was called in to assist the family.

The fire was under control within 45 minutes. Saccone said there are no fire hydrants in the neighborhood so four tanker trucks that each hold 3,000 gallons of water were called to the scene.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

In addition to Gales Ferry, Ledyard, Naval Submarine Base, Poquetanuck and Mohegan Tribal fire departments also responded.
