Proud of principles of Democratic Party

This is in response to Reid Judd's letter, "Republicans terrible, Dems not much better," (Dec. 12).

I too am a Democrat - a flaming, liberal, Ted Kennedy ilk Democrat, and I am proud of this label. I believe we have a responsibility to take care of each other, to support our elders in their final years, to provide health care to everyone, no matter what their financial status. I believe we need to welcome anyone to this country who is looking for a better life, and to work for the common good. And I believe that if we work together, we can end discrimination, bigotry and hatred.

I also believe that most citizens in this country would agree that we have prided ourselves on these values. It completely baffles me that anyone would vote for a person or party that represents the complete opposite of these values. I understand the importance of a balanced budget, of controlling government spending, and limiting the size and power of our government. But these issues should not supersede our most basic need and responsibility - to care for each other, to maintain peace in our lives, and help those who have less.
