Shumaker, Jean-Pierre are two of the state's best

Valley Regional/Old Lyme's Chris Jean-Pierre (4), who helped lead the Warriors to their first state title on Saturday, was named to the CHSCA overall (all classes) all-state team as a defensive back on Tuesday.

Seniors JoJo Shumaker of Ledyard and Chris Jean-Pierre of the Valley Regional/Old Lyme cooperative program were selected to the 2014 Connecticut High School Coaches Association all-state overall team, the association announced Tuesday.

Players were nominated by coaches and placed on one of five teams — the overall or the Class LL, L, M and S divisons.

Jean-Pierre, who was chosen to the overall defensive team, was a two-way player for Warriors, who finished 13-0 and rallied to beat Ansonia 21-20 in the Class S-Large championship game, the first state title in program history. He threw for 1,203 yards and 20 touchdowns with two interceptions as a quarterback and also ran for 1,256 yards and 19 touchdowns. He had 89 tackles at safety and averaged 36.7 yards a punt. Jean-Pierre also returned punts and made 5 of 6 extra points in a Oct. 17 game while filling in for Valley's injured kicker Jared Roche.

Shumaker ran for 2,246 yards and 40 touchdowns to help the Colonels to an unbeaten regular season and the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division championship. He also had 13 catches for 282 yards and six touchdowns for Ledyard.

Phyllip Thomas (wide receiver) of Ledyard was chosen to the Class M offense, while teammates Leo Clinton Jr. (linebacker) and River Thomas (defensive back), Phyllip's twin brother, made it as defenders. Jelani Lucas (defensive back) and J. Hunter Roman (defensive end) of New London were also selected to the Class M defensive team. All five players are seniors.

In Class S, Valley/OL senior Justin Cheverier (linebacker) was voted onto the team as a defender while Roche, another senior, was named the placekicker on offense along with two Montville players, junior Kevin Murtha (tackle) and junior Jon McCray (tight end).

Norwich Free Academy senior Khaleed Exum-Strong (running back) was a defensive pick on the Class LL team.
