High school swimming / 2014-15 preview capsules

Dakota Williams of Fitch won the 100 freestyle, one of his two victories during last year's ECC championships, and he returns this year as the Falcons begin a new co-op program with Stonington.

    East Lyme

    Coach: Jen Lyman (1st year)

Key returnees: Sr. Ryan Dumas (distance freestyle), Sr. Danny Munch (sprint freestyle), Sr. Ethan Opsahl (sprint freestyle), Sr. Evan Opsahl (butterfly, IM), Sr. Mitch Ryan (diving), Sr. Kevin Sullivan (diving).

Top newcomers: Fr. Jason Good (sprint freestyle), Fr. Eain Goolsbey (freestyle, breaststroke), Fr. Ben Pouty (diving).

Outlook: Lyman replaces Jack Stabach and takes over a team that suffered major graduation losses, including four individual ECC champions last season. The Vikings do return Ryan, the reigning ECC diving champion, and have some experienced seniors to lead the way, but a large freshman class will also play a key role as East Lyme attempts to maintain its standard of excellence in the conference.

    Fitch/Stonington

    Coach: Ken Berg (35th year)

Key returnees: Sr. Dakota Williams, Jr. Sam Kokomoor, Jr. Sean Estep, Jr. Aaron Lewis, Jr. Alex Belair, Jr. Malik Mitchell, Jr. Will Ferguson.

Top newcomers: John Moody, Sam Rea, Patrick Nowak, Matt Planchon, Ruby Lee Robinson, Dyland LaPointe, Sarah Morrison, Amy Bridgham, Alex Green, Ethan Montalto.

Outlook: Stonington joins Fitch as a cooperative program this winter after Ledyard moved into a co-op effort with NFA, and that's good news for Berg, who had only seven Fitch swimmers in the program. Those seven are solid, however, and with the addition of the Stonington newcomers, the Falcons have the ability to equal or better last season's 9-3 record. Williams is the reigning ECC champ in the 50 and 100 freestyles (he was named Swimmer of the Meet at the ECC championships) while Williams, Estep and Kokomoor were members of two ECC championship relay teams (200 and 400 freestyle).

    New London

    Coach: Brandon Biondi (1st year)

    Key returnee: Jr. Callan Veitheim.

Top newcomers: So. Timothy Glavan, So. Moli Michel.

Outlook: The Whalers are short on experience and numbers, but Biondi is excited about building the program to a competitive leve. "I hope to have a successful season where we develop some strong swimmers for next year and potentially have one or two swimmers qualify for ECCs."

    NFA/Ledyard

    Coach: Tom Theve (24th year)

Key returnees: Sr. Dylan Crider (diving, breaststroke), Jr. Yovanny Santos (sprints), Jr. Tim Yuen (backstroke, IM), Jr. Zachary Collins (distance), So. Brady Friese (back), Jr. Kevin Sikorski (breast), Jr. Seth Strader (freestyle), Jr. Henry Rios (butterfly), So. Elias Rosado (freestyle), So. Jack Wheeler (breast), Sr. Steven Boyd (free), Sr. Fred France (fly).

Top newcomers: Fr. Anthony Difederica (free), So. Colby Knolhuff (free), So. Michael Neville (free), Fr. Camron Rossi (free), Jr. Angelo Annunziato (free), Sr. Joseph Warmus (free), Fr. Aaron Barina (free).

Outlook: The Wildcats are now a cooperative program with Ledyard and will swim its home meets at the Mashantucket Community Center. NFA lost nine seniors to graduation after going 6-8, but with the addition of Ledyard swimmers the team has enough depth and talent to be competitive in the ECC.

    Waterford

    Coach: Brett Arnold (14th year)

Key returnees: Sr. Dan Clark (freestyle), Sr. Kyle Waters (backstroke), Sr. Alex Athenian (free, backstroke), Jr. Matt Patton (diving), Jr. Kevin Su (breaststroke), So. Brendan McCarty (free), So. Jacob Hotsky (free, butterfly), Sr. Edi Mucka (free), Jr. Nexhat Mucka (free).

Top newcomers: Fr. Thomas Emery (free), Fr. Christian Silveria (diving, free), Fr. Logan Bowdish (free), So. Lyman Nuttall (free), So. Olivia Stack (diving), Fr. Mackenzie Czyzewski (diving, free), So. Bray Griffith Potter (diving, free), Fr. Lucas Wenc (free), Sr. Max Wolfley (free).

Outlook: The Lancers struggled a year ago, finishing 2-10, but with the leadership of seniors Clark, Waters and Athenian, Arnold expects Waterford to improve this winter. Su and McCarty are two swimmers to watch and Arnold's younger athletes are really pushing each other to improve.

    Williams

    Coach: Doug Hagen (10th year)

Key returnees: Fr. Will Jarrett (distance, IM), So. Grace Linhares (free, IM, butterfly), Sr. Josh Goldstein (free, backstroke), Jr. Carly Meyer (back, IM), Jr. Kaela Milewski (free), Jr. Hillary Goldstein (free, butterfly), Jr. Amar Viswanathan (free), Fr. Andrew Little (free), Emily O'Brien (free, breaststroke).

Top newcomers: Winnie Elenteny, Hartmut Doerwaldt, Alec Potts, Cyrus D'Arcy, Owen Padgett, Allessandra D'ARcy.

Outlook: The Blues, a co-ed program, will be rebuilding after being hit hard by graduation losses. Jarrett and Linhares are young, but talented swimmers who will lead Williams, who will rely heavily on newcomers to provide depth.
