    Pre-game preview: Florida

UConn is running out of chances to score a significant non-conference victory.

Today’s game at Florida marks the next to last opportunity this season.

It certainly will improve UConn’s odds if senior Ryan Boatright is available.

We’ll find prior to the 2 p.m. tip-off if Boatright’s bruised left high has healed enough for him to take the court.

    Here’s a pre-game preview:

    -- Location: O’Connell Center

    -- Tip-off: 2 p.m. (CBS)

    -- Records: UConn 6-5, Florida 7-5

-- Last game: UConn lost to Temple, 57-53 (OT), Wednesday; Florida fell to Florida State, 65-63, Tuesday

    -- Probable starters:

Florida, 6-1 so. guard Kasey Hill (7.8 pts, 4.4 assists), 6-4 jr. guard Michael Frazier II (14.6 pts, 4.9 rebs), 6-8 r-s jr. forward Dorian Finney-Smith (12.8 pts, 5.4 rebs), 6-8 r-s jr. forward Alex Murphy (7.0 pts, 3.5 rebs), 6-10 grad. center Jon Horford (8.8 pts, 6.1 rebs)

UConn, 6-0 sr. guard Ryan Boatright (17.6 pts, 5.2 rebs, 4.0 assists), r-s so. Rodney Purvis (9.6 pts), 6-7 fr. forward Daniel Hamilton (11.1 pts, 6.6 rebs), 6-9 so. forward Kentan Facey (7.2 pts, 7.0 rebs), 7-0 so. center Amida Brimah (12.2 pts, 4.5 rebs)

    Noteworthy:

-- UConn leads the series, 2-1, winning twice last season – 65-64 in Storrs and 63-53 in national semifinal.

Only a combined nine players – five from Florida and four from UConn -- are back from the two teams.

Boatright and Phil Nolan started the Final Four game while Terrence Samuel and Amida Brimah came off the bench.

Florida returns starter Michael Frazier II and reserves Kasey Hill, Dorian Finney-Smith, Chris Walker and DeVon Walker.

-- Containing Frazier will be the key for the Huskies.

Boatright earned the defensive assignment last season, holding Frazier to a combined 10 points in two games. Frazier set a single season school record for 3-pointers (118) last year.

If Boatright sits out today, sophomore Terrence Samuel will likely draw the job.

“Mike Frazier is a very good shooter,” Samuel said. “He’s like the key to their offense.”

-- UConn and Florida share one common foe in Yale.

The Huskies lost to the Bulldogs, 45-44, and the Gators rolled to an 85-47 victory.

-- Florida’s top reserve is Chris Walker, a 6-foot-10 sophomore forward averaging 6.4 points and four rebounds.

-- Expect a low scoring game.

UConn has held three of its last four opponents to under 38 percent shooting and allowed an average of 61.2 points per game overall. Florida’s foes are shooting 38.7 percent and averaging 56.2 points per game.

-- The Huskies begin a brutal stretch today, playing four of five on the road. They visit South Florida on Tuesday, host Cincinnati on Saturday and then travel to Tulsa Jan. 13 and Stanford Jan. 17.

-- This is UConn’s first true road game this season.

-- The Huskies have dropped five of last eight overall.

-- Coach Kevin Ollie was asked on Friday what his team has to do to get going offensively.

“We need to really penetrate and jump-stop. Guys got to move themselves off the ball and get to different spots and make shots. …. We’ve got to cut hard and get in transition and rebound.”

Ollie said the key is to find the right spacing.

“Last year we had the correct spacing all the time. We’ve got to get back to that."

-- Hot: Facey is averaging 10.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in the last two games. Cold: UConn is shooting 12-for-55 (21.8 percent) from 3-point range in its five losses.

-- The Gators insist revenge isn’t on their minds today.

“Last year is over with,” Finney-Smith said. “We had a chance to beat them twice and were unsuccessful. The game against UConn is not a revenge game. It’s just the next game on the schedule.”

It’s only natural to think about payback, according to Boatright.

“If you’re a basketball player, you’re definitely thinking about it,” Boatright said.

-- The Huskies have been turnover-prone at times this season. They need to take care of the ball against Florida pressure.

Freshman Daniel Hamilton (team high 36 turnovers), Boatright (30) and Samuel (21) are three of the primary ball-handlers.
