Sunken yacht is raised from Norwich Harbor

A 37-foot yacht named the Black Pearl, which caught fire and sank on New Year's Eve, is raised Sunday by crews at the Marina at American Wharf located in Norwich Harbor.

Norwich — The Black Pearl, a 37-foot-yacht that sank Wednesday after catching fire, was raised Sunday afternoon from Norwich Harbor.

The effort began in the morning with divers attaching air bags to the vessel. When inflated, they raised the Black Pearl to the surface several hours later.

Members of Clear Harbor Environmental Services were on hand to contain any hazardous fuel or materials that might come from the boat as it surfaces, said Brian Emanuelson, emergency response coordinator for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

As workers dockside coordinated lines and hoses around the U-shaped empty slip, divers with headlamps occasionally surfaced to make adjustments before slipping back underwater.

“The floating of a boat can take a while,” Emanuelson said.

Two other boats docked at the Marina at American Wharf were damaged in the fire, which is under investigation. The Norwich Police Department’s crime unit van was on the scene Sunday as well.
