Groton police charge man in attempted stabbing of officer

Groton – Town police arrested a Groton man Friday after the man allegedly tried to stab the officers with a knife.

Groton Town police responded to 1290 North Road, Lot 3, to assist probation officers who were conducting a home visit on 52-year-old Robert Hart, according to Detective Lt. John Varone.

Probation officers determined that Hart was in need of medical attention and had called in fire and emergency medical services personnel. Officers Joel Lenda and Daniel Kenyon arrived and were speaking to Hart, Varone said, when Hart grabbed a knife that was hidden in a chair and attempted to stab the officers.

Officer Lenda was able to subdue and disarm Hart.

“Here is an incident where an officer used exceptional restraint in defending himself, his partner as well as other emergency responders,” Varone said.

Hart was taken for evaluation and possible treatment of his medical condition and will be charged with attempted first-degree assault, attempted assault on a police officer, threatening and first-degree reckless endangerment.

No emergency responders were injured during this incident.
