Local roundup: A day to remember for Coast Guard men's lacrosse team

Connecticut College Mairead Hynes, left, was named D3hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year.

New Haven — Freshman Matt Huemme had four goals for the Coast Guard Academy men's lacrosse team Tuesday as the Bears defeated Albertus Magnus 18-8 for the first win in program history.

Pat Dreiss added three goals and Blaise Curtis and Justin Huemme each had two goals and an assist for the Bears (1-3), who are in their first season with a varsity team. Coast Guard led 8-6 at halftime and the teams traded goals before the Bears erupted for six unanswered goals to give them a comfortable 15-7 lead with 2:11 remaining in the game.

Ryan Carpenter made two saves in goal and Nick Chicoine had a dominant game in the faceoff circle, winning 24 of 28 and also collecting 15 ground balls.

The Bears play their first-ever varsity home game at 7 p.m. Saturday against Norwich.

    Women's basketball

    • Mairead Hynes of Connecticut College was named the D3hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year, New England Women's Basketball Association Rookie of the Year and also honored as a fourth-team selection on the D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region team.

Hynes, from Mahopac, N.Y., finished her freshman season averaging 16.9 points and 10.4 rebounds, the only player in the New England Small College Athletic Conference to average double figures in both categories. She set the Conn single-season record and led the league with 132 made free throws. Conn (16-9) posted its highest win total since 2012.

"We're thrilled that D3hoops selected her as the Northeast Region rookie of the year and it's neat to see that she is the only freshman in the northeast to be named to one of the four all-region teams," Conn coach Brian Wilson said.

"We are excited that Mairead has been recognized by the NEWBA coaches as Rookie of the Year. I think this speaks to her impressive stats as many coaches did not have the opportunity to see her play in person."
