Plainfield man charged in abuse of infant

Plainfield — A 36-year-old resident of the Moosup section of town was charged Saturday with first degree assault, risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment in connection with alleged abuse of a three-month-old infant.

Police said Robert P. Tarkowski of 65 South Main St. was caring for the infant girl on Thursday when he deliberately injured her. As a result, the infant was transported to Windham Hospital in Willimantic and then quickly transferred to Connecticut Children Medical Center in Hartford, police said. She was treated for multiple fractures to her skull and arm and remains hospitalized, police said.

After being alerted to the alleged abuse, police began an investigation and a search-and-seizure warrant was obtained for Tarkowski’s residence. The warrant was executed on Friday. A warrant for his arrest also was obtained, police said.

On Saturday at 5:15 a.m., police located Tarkowski at 14 Miller Road in Sterling. He was arrested without incident and transported to the Plainfield Police Department.

Tarkowski was being held on a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Danielson Superior Court on Monday. Police said the investigation remains active.
