    Mariners riding a wave

    • Mitchell College dominated the New England Collegiate Conference weekly honors. Senior Kenneth Olszewski received the player of the week award for baseball while junior Al Jordan Johnson, a Fitch High School graduate, and Bryton Ferri were named pitcher and rookie of the week, respectively. The trio helped the league-leading Mariners go 4-0 last week, sweeping doubleheaders against Nichols College and Daniel Webster College.

    Olszewski batted .615 with two doubles, a triple and four RBI. Johnson pitched seven scoreless innings and earned a win to improve to 3-0 overall and added a save and Ferris was the winning pitcher in a 2-1 win over Nichols College, allowing one run and five hits in five innings.

    • In men’s lacrosse, senior Jordan Cook of Groton and McCarthy Brodaski of East Lyme took home player and rookie of the week honors, respectively. Cook scored a career-high five goals in a come-from-behind 11-9 win over Becker College Saturday and made eight saves in his first career start in goal in a 10-9 loss to Albertus Magnus Wednesday. Brodaski had a team-high seven points in two games last week for the Mariners (4-4, 2-0).

    • In softball, sophomore Brittany Fiederlein was named NECC pitcher of the week after pitching her way to two victories in a sweep of Elms College. She threw 10 scoreless innings, including a complete game shutout as a starter, and struck out seven overall. She also belted a home run for the Mariners (2-10, 2-0).

    • Sophomore Ashley Murtha received player of the week in women’s lacrosse for the first time in her career. She had a team-high 11 goals in losses to Elms College and Mass Maritime. She leads the Mariners (0-5, 0-1) with 20 goals overall through five games this season.

    • The NECC selected sophomore Adam Diaz as the men’s tennis player of the week. He won his No. 1 singles match in straight sets and combined with Orson Sinclair to post a doubles win against Lesley University. 

    Tracking the Bears

    • The Coast Guard Academy baseball team needs just three wins to match last year’s victory total. The Bears (10-4, 3-2) have had two five-game winning streaks this season. Sophomore Brendan McNeil of Pawcatuck (.378 batting average, 11 RBI), freshman Alex Murdoch (.351, 10 RBI), junior Kyle Wood (.350, 8 RBI) and sophomore Tim Duncan (.333, 12 RBI) are the top offensive threats for the Bears.

    • Cherokee Strickland is having a productive sophomore season for the softball team, leading the team in home runs (two) and RBI (11 RBI). Junior Morgan Kingston has a team-high .446 batting average and 10 RBI while senior Erin Lisko is second at .400 for the Bears (9-7, 1-3).

    Camel highlights

    • Senior Josh Suneby won his first nine matches at No. 1 singles for the Connecticut College men's tennis team before losing twice last weekend.

    • Freshman midfielder Ben Parens has excelled in the face-off battles, winning at a 61 percent rate for the men's lacrosse team. Parens also has a team-high 75 ground balls for the Camels (2-9, 0-6).

    • The women's water polo team will be the top seed in the Division III Championship tournament this weekend at Grove City (Pa.) College. The Camels are 14-0 in Division III play, 15-12 overall. Kelsey Millward (63 goals, 55 steals), Nicky Jacobson (44 goals, 19 assists), Isabelle Banuex (36 goals, 33 assists) and goalie Ashley Amey (92 saves) power the Camels.

    Around the region

    • UConn-Avery Point’s George Hardison was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 21 Division III women’s basketball coach of the year. Briana Padewski was a Region 21 Division III first team selection while Carynn Bartolucci of East Lyme made the second team and Marissa Moncato was an honorable mention. 

    • Eastern Connecticut State University freshman Savonnah Artis of Waterford was named the Little East Conference track athlete of the week after her performance last weekend at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic. Artis placed eighth out of 43 runners in the 200 meters with a time of 27.47 seconds, took second in the triple jump and ran a leg on the third place 4x100 relay team.

    • In other ECSU news, sophomore Orlando Gonzalez of Montville earned the Little East’s top weekly pitcher honors. Gonzalez threw 15 scoreless innings in two starts, allowing seven hits while striking out 25 and walking four. Gonzalez pitched eight shutout innings to pick up the victory in a 3-0 win over Plymouth State and went seven shutout innings while earning a no-decision against Southern Maine, the top ranked Division III team in New England. He leads the Warriors in earned run average (2.28), strikeouts (28), innings (232/3) and opposing batting average (2.28). 

    • Western Connecticut State University junior Matt Greene of New London drove five runs in a doubleheader sweep of Plymouth State last weekend to give him a team-leading 12 RBI this season. He raised his batting average to .350 in 13 games. 

    • Junior attack Casey Sullivan of Waterford recorded his 100th career point in Lasell College’s 14-7 loss to Emmanuel College on March 24. Sullivan leads the team with 24 points on 14 goals and 10 assists. Junior teammate Andrew Suh, a St. Bernard graduate, has 14 goals and nine assists overall. 

    Dave Hall, a junior third baseman from Groton, ranks first on the Plymouth State baseball team in batting average (.304) and hits (14).

    Theresa Kane, a two-time all-state selection during her Stonington High School career, is a starting outfielder for the Georgetown softball team. She ranks first on the team in runs scored (23), stolen bases (13) and is tied for first in hits (30) while batting .283 overall.

    • Norwich Free Academy graduate Nate Wilson is one of the top offensive players for the WCSU men’s lacrosse team. He has a team-high 18 goals to go with six assists. Defender Zach Bartlett and goalie Kevin Seery, both seniors from East Lyme, have both started all 10 games.
