Norwich — Norwich businessman Zane Megos, who is currently on probation for taking deposit money for apartments and houses that never became available, was arrested Tuesday on drug charges.

Police said the Norwich Police Department's Community Policing Unit, along with the Patrol Division, arrested Megos about 5:50 p.m. after he was found in possession of narcotics.

Megos, 57, of 31 Dellwood Road was charged with possession of narcotics and six counts of violation of probation. Police said they found Megos to be in possession of the painkiller Oxycontin.

Megos was sentenced last April to a suspended one-year sentence and three years' probation for his role in the rental scheme.

He was arrested by Norwich police in June and August 2012 on the larceny charges and again in November 2013 on the charge of violating the court's order that he not take new deposits for apartments.

The Day published a series of stories in May 2012 on Megos' practice of taking numerous deposits for apartments in condemned buildings and for apartments and houses that he did not own in Norwich and New London.

Megos was released from custody after posting $32,500 in bonds. He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in New London on April 30 for the violation of probation charges and is scheduled to appear May 7 in Norwich Superior Court on the narcotics charge.
