820 bags of heroin seized from New London home

New London — State and New London police found more than 800 bags of heroin Sunday in a New London apartment when they attempted to locate a man who had a warrant out for his arrest.

State police said about 9:50 a.m. they went to 48 Granite St., Apt. 6, in an attempt to find Jevon Walker, 39, who was wanted on a warrant for felony and misdemeanor charges.

Walker has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for assault, violation of probation and violation of a protective order. He is also a registered sex offender. He was convicted in 2001 for third-degree sexual assault and in 2002 for risk of injury to a minor.

When police found Walker and placed him under arrest, they said they saw heroin in plain view in the living room. Walker, police said, gave conflicting accounts as to who was with him in the apartment.

Officers searched the home for safety reasons and found another man, Maurice Walker, 38, hiding in a bedroom closet. A bag of marijuana was found on the top shelf of the closet. A tobacco bag containing 820 bags of heroin was found on the closet floor where Maurice was hiding.

The home was secured and a search and seizure warrant was obtained. In addition to the heroin, police found 1 gram of crack cocaine, 23 grams of marijuana and $2,123 in cash.

Jevon Walker and Maurice Walker, both of 48 Granite St., Apt. 6, were each charged with operating a drug factory, possession with intent to sell, distribution of a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a school, illegal possession of narcotics and possession of marijuana.

It is not clear how the men are related.

Both men were arraigned Monday in New London Superior Court.

The Statewide Narcotics Task Force was also at the scene and assisted with the investigation, police said.
