New London – City police are investigating a shooting Monday night at the Crystal Avenue high rise where at least one person was shot.

Police were called to 40 Crystal Ave. at 9:55 p.m. and found a young woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

Witnesses said the teenager was shot in the arm by one of two men who crossed a field from a parking lot to the rear of the complex. The woman was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

A toddler was also taken away by ambulance. It was unclear late Monday how she was injured. Police at the scene declined to comment on the shooting.

One resident said she was sitting outside with her 2-month-old child and heard what she thought were fireworks. She turned to see a man “shooting, shooting, shooting,” toward the courtyard where people were congregating and children were playing. Another witness said there were two men, one carrying a handgun.

“He just started shooting,” said the woman, who did not give her name.

Police could be seen walking the field with flashlights and questioning witnesses.

Fifteen minutes after the shooting, area police departments put out a bulletin for two males in a white Dodge Caravan. One was described as wearing a white sweatshirt while the other was dressed all in black. Officers were warned the man in all black should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (860) 447-5269.
