Public to hear plans for improving Mitchell Woods

New London — A plan to restore the pond and meadow and add a walkway, cross-country running loop, outdoor classroom and educational signs to Alfred Mitchell Woods will be presented to the public during a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The meeting will take place at Weller Center at Mitchell College on Montauk Avenue.

Kathryn Gaffney, spokeswoman for Mitchell College, said Tuesday that the 26-acre woodland and public recreation area between Montauk and Ocean avenues has become overgrown, and that Janet Steinmayer, who became the college president in 2014, has made it a priority to strengthen Mitchell’s connection to the community by improving what she has called a “beloved New London landmark.”

The college is the trustee of the property, which was donated by Annie O. Mitchell in 1931 in memory of her husband along with a trust fund. The college is drawing on the fund to pay for the creation of a master plan by Kent + Frost, a Mystic landscape architecture firm, to “improve the recreational and environmental quality of the woods,” the college said in a news release.

Gaffney said the college also received a $17,500 grant from Dominion Resources, owner of Millstone Power Station in Waterford, that will pay for the restoration of the pond, including creation of a wetland buffer.

“This is a great start for us,” she said. “The new president wants to have a strong partnership with the community, and being a good community neighbor is part of that.”

During the meeting, Chad Frost of Kent + Frost will present the plan, answer questions and hear feedback from the public. The plan will be executed in stages as funds become available, Gaffney said.

The plan was presented to the eight-member advisory board for the property in February, and also to students, faculty, staff and members of the Parents Advisory Board, she said.
