New London man charged in 2012 assault, robbery

New London — A former city man is slated to appear in court next month to face charges connected to the 2012 assault and robbery of a local landlord.

Andre “Dre” Mercer, 46, of Greenville, N.C., was charged on June 11 with first-degree robbery, home invasion, second-degree assault sixth-degree larceny.

The charges, according to court records, relate to the Sept. 26, 2012 ambush of man at 27 W. Coit St.

The victim claims he was performing renovation work at the multi-family dwelling when he was attacked by a man and woman. He said he was punched, struck by a pillow case containing a hard object and a 2-by-4 piece of lumber. The assailants made off with $200.

Police said the suspects in the assault were identified as Mercer and his girlfriend, Denise “Neece” Hughes. Police said Mercer, at the time, was a convicted felon with 25 prior arrests.

In addition to the charges related to the home invasion, police charged Mercer with two counts of violation of probation and three counts of second-degree failure to appear in court.

Mercer, who remains held on bail, is due to appear July 1 in New London Superior Court. It is unclear is Hughes ever was charged.
