Dear Abby column is hardly news

Editor's note: This version corrects the spelling of Abby.

Do the digital editors of The Day value local news so little that they decide to give top priority to the "Dear Abby" column, with absolutely no local connections and certainly no news? On June 22, for a second time in a month, that folksy, syndicated advice column has been the lead story under the "Local" news heading. It's not only inappropriate, it's very bad journalism and hardly appropriate for a "newspaper" that calls itself a prize-winning publication.

The exigencies of publishing, whether on paper or on a digital screen, should neither replace news judgment nor diminish the emphasis on local news, which is why most of us pay to read The Day.

Where a story appears and how it's played are still important to us readers.
