    Local roundup: Waterford, Norwich advance to state Little League (11-12) final four

    West Hartford — Waterford advanced to the championship round of the Connecticut Little League (11-12) baseball tournament by defeating Newington, 14-2 in four innings, in the Division 3 final on Sunday afternoon.

    Waterford, the District 10 champion, will face District 11 champion Norwich on Wednesday in the opening game of the four-team double-elimination tournament at Newington at 8 p.m. Norwich scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally past Ellington 11-10 in the Division 4 title game on Sunday.

    In Waterford's win, Luke Sokolski and Jared Burrows hit two home runs apiece while Sokolski finished with four hits and Burrows was the winning pitcher, allowing just two hits over four innings. Matt Sanford added a three-run homer and Ryan Bakken had a double.

    State LL (9-10) Div. 3 softball

    • Waterford captured the Connecticut Little League (9-10) Division 3 title with a 4-2 victory over Cromwell. Waterford, the District 10 champion, advances to Wednesday's Section II championship game against the Division 4 winner (South Windsor of Stafford) at Bates Woods Field in New London at 5:30 p.m.

    Waterford's Maddie Burrows pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts over five innings and Milena Walker earned the save by striking out the side in the sixth. Anna Donahue had two hits, including a double, and score a run while Abby Maynard scored twice and Emma Marelli walked and scored Waterford's first run in the first inning.

    State Legion tournament

    • Rocky Hill/Cromwell/Portland advanced to the championship round of the Connecticut Senior American Legion Northern Division baseball playoff series with a 5-1 win over New London in the winners' bracket final. New London, which scored its lone run when Timmie Jackson walked with the bases loaded to score Pieter Khoury, will play Simsbury, an 8-0 winner over South Windsor in an elimination game, in the losers' bracket final on Monday night at 6:30 at Rotary Field in South Windsor. 

    Schooners beat Valley

    • Tim Holmes (Fisher) pitched five shutout innings and Jessie Berardi (St. John's) went 4-for-5 to lead the Mystic Schooners to a 5-1 victory over the Valley Blue Sox in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Dan Hoy (Princeton) added three hits and two RBI for the Schooners and ex-Fitch star Aaron Hill (UConn) was 2-for-4.

    State LL (9-10) Div. 3 baseball

    • Waterford was eliminated in the Connecticut Little League (9-10) Division 3 tournament, losing to Cromwell 7-6 in the semifinals. Sean O'Connell hit a three-run home run for Waterford while Jabez White drove in three runs and Mason Concascia had three hits.

    Sutera (11-12) tournament

    • Tait Sawden struck out nine and Jack Carney earned the win in relief as Lyme/Old Lyme defeated Mystic 6-3. Sawden, Colbe Andrews and Avery Wyman all homered for Lyme/Old Lyme and Connor Wyman had a double. Colin Anderson had two triples and Jacob Bendick a double for Mystic.

    • Bowen Baker struck out eight and Ethan McCarthy homered to power Pawcatuck past Waterford 7-1. Drew Champagne, Wynn Hammond and Ian Spracklin had two hits apiece for Pawcatuck and Joe Lathrop had two doubles for Waterford.

    • Guissippie Satti doubled, tripled and homered as New London defeated East Lyme 8-3. Elijah Morton hit a triple and Noah James had two hits for New London. Nolan Connolly hit two home runs and Owen Robbins and Carter Chambers each had two hits for East Lyme.

    • Montville defeated Groton 2-0 as Colby Miner pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Andrew Benoit doubled and Isaiah Gallagher homered for Montville. Max Grossman struck out seven for Groton.

    Sutera (9-10) tournament

    • Ledyard defeated Groton 13-0 as Braydon Wuestner struck out 10 batters and Sam Almeida and Robert Cambell had two hits each. Dominick Zuliani hit a triple for Groton.

    • John Viens doubled in Quinn Speller with the winning run as Waterford defeated Norwich 13-12. Speller had four hits, including a double, and Kolby Quinn hit a triple and a single. Nalyce Dudley hit a double and a triple and Dominic Pontbriant had four hits for Norwich.
