Police chase leads to arrests of two burglary suspects

Groton — An Uncasville man and a Mystic woman were arrested Friday on burglary and larceny charges after an extensive police and K-9 search of the Noank area where a homeowner had reported someone had entered her residence at 3:44 a.m., police said.

Police said the two might be connected with a string of burglaries in southeastern Connecticut.

Wayne Malinowsky, 29, of 26 Fitch Hill Road, Uncasville, was arrested a short time after the search began.

Barbara Kuhn, 37, of 22 Overlook Drive, Mystic, was arrested several hours later on information received from a resident who had received a reverse-911 phone message alerting neighbors to the situation.

Malinowsky was charged with first-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny.

Kuhn was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny.

The extensive search began when police were called to a residence on High Street in Noank at 3:44 a.m. by a woman who reported an unknown person had entered her residence and fled when confronted.

Multiple Groton Town police officers were dispatched to the area and began an extensive search. A K-9 unit from East Lyme Police aided in the search, and Malinowsky was taken into custody a short time later.

The search continued and was expanded after police learned at least one other person was involved in the burglary. Residents were alerted to the situation as well.

At 11:10 a.m., a resident who had received the alert directed police to New London Road, where Kuhn was found and arrested.

Groton Town patrol officers, detectives from the Groton Town Police Department, along with investigators from the City of Groton Police Department, Groton Long Point, State Police Troop K and the City of Norwich Police Department are continuing to pursue leads that may potentially connect these suspects and others to a series of residential burglaries that recently have occurred in Southeastern Connecticut, Groton Town police said.

The investigation is continuing and additional arrests are expected.

Groton Town detectives request the public’s assistance by contacting the Groton Town Police Department if they believe they may have been the victim of similar incidents. Contact Detective Robert Emery at (860) 441-6712.

“This is a continuing investigation by several area police departments,” Groton Police Chief Louis J. Fusaro Jr. said. “We have information that indicates that these individuals may have perpetrated multiple home burglaries throughout our region of the state in recent months. Officers and detectives from Groton, as well as surrounding communities, are continuing their investigative efforts and working to identify other victims. We anticipate additional arrests sometime in the future as a result of this ongoing investigation.”
