    Local roundup: Shannon lifts Waterford past NFA

    Waterford — Colin Shannon scored two goals and Austin Schwartz collected five saves to help the Waterford boys' soccer team beat Norwich Free Academy, 4-0, on Friday night.

    Cory Conderino and Daniel Castelpoggi also scored for the Lancers (6-2-1), and Logan Bowdish contributed two assists.

    Troy Maurer had seven saves for the Wildcats (5-2).

    H.S. volleyball

    • Alannah Bunkley recorded 30 assists and 26 service points to lead Fitch to a 3-0 win over Ledyard in Groton. Game scores were 25-12, 25-16 and 25-21. Mackenzie Aldridge added 12 kills in the victory, and teammates Caroline Taber and Jen Severino contributed 10 kills each.

    • Old Lyme lost to Morgan in a Shoreline Conference match, 25-6, 25-7, 25-12. Sophia Romeo had eight kills, Lexi Duddy had eight digs and Marissa Smith had 14 assists for the Wildcats (3-7).

    • Windham Tech beat Grasso Tech 25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 25-12 in a Constitution State Conference match. Vanessa Parra had three kills and six digs and Keila Lastraglio had four assists and eight digs for Grasso (2-5).

    • Lyman Memorial beat NFA 3-2, winning 25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 23-25, 15-13. Cebria Outlow had 20 kills, Isis Deloatch had 11 kills and three blocks and Mackenzie Burke had 11 kills and 25 digs for NFA (4-5). 

    H.S. swimming

    • NFA avenged an early-season loss with a 93-92 win over Waterford in an Eastern Connecticut Conference meet. Genevieve Buckridge won the 200-meter IM (2:54.35) and 100 butterfly (1:21.37) for NFA (3-5, 2-4) and teammates Katie Spendolini and Jocelyn McNally also won events. Meika Gathy won the 50 freestyle (30.79) and 100 backstroke (1:09.54) for Waterford (3-5, 2-4) and teammates Jayne Darras, Tori Zane and Caitlin Henderson also won events.

    • East Lyme picked up a pair of wins, beating Windham/Lyman 104-37 in an ECC meet and Middletown 95-84 in a nonleague meet. Kate Orefice and Gretchen Stelter were double winners for East Lyme (8-0, 6-0) and teammates Alexis Dumais, Jasmine Bazinet, Chara Proud and Vanessa Vlaun also won events. Orefice won the 50-yard freestyle (28.09) and 100 butterfly (1:10.08), and Stelter won the 100 freestyle (59.84) and 100 backstroke (1:09.06).

    • Lauren Roper won a pair of events and was on two winning relay teams, leading Fitch to a 108-62 win over Ledyard in an ECC meet. Roper won the 200 freestyle (2:17.75) and 100 freestyle (59.62). Skyler Pearse and Cassandra Cini also won events for Fitch (7-1, 5-1). Olivia Strelevitz won the 100 butterfly (1:04.97) and 100 backstroke (1:06.53) for Ledyard (3-3, 3-3) and teammates Megan Pipech and Maddie Johanson also won events.

    Girls' soccer

    • Mia Brennan scored 10 minutes into the second half as Waterford beat Plainfield 1-0 in an ECC Medium Division game. Brennan knocked in a rebound of a Claire Hurley shot. Jordan Kovacs made seven saves for Waterford (6-1-1, 3-0-1).

    Stephanie deLaforcade scored three goals as East Lyme remained unbeaten with a 7-0 win over Griswold. Katie Christiansen had two goals, Mackenzie Northcutt had three assists and Isabelle Moore and Haley Ashton scored goals for the Vikings (9-0). Hayley Sorrentino recorded her ninth shutout of the season.

    • St. Bernard lost to Bacon Academy 2-0. Marissa Fratoni had five saves for St. Bernard (4-3-1).

    Women's college soccer

    • Rachel Hill's ninth goal of the season helped No. 20 UConn beat Temple, 1-0, in an American Athletic Conference match at Morrone Stadium.

    Kim Urbanek had the assist for the Huskies (10-2, 2-1), which came in the 37th minute. Emily Armstrong collected five saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season.

    Men's cross country

    • Connecticut College finished 21st out of 39 teams at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh. Ben Bosworth led Conn with a 33rd-place finish, completing the 8K course in 25:23.

    Women's cross country

    • Conn College finished 19th in the 45-team Paul Short Run at Lehigh. Ashley Curran (36th, 22:16) and Alex Fromme (38th, 22:16) were the top finishers for the Camels.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Waterford lost to Woodstock in an ECC match on Thursday, 2-0. Karena Bushey made six saves for Waterford (2-4-1, 2-4-1).

    Local golf

    • Emily Mazzola of Groton recently scored a hole-in-one on the 162-yard seventh hole on the red course at Elmridge in Pawcatuck. She accomplished the feat using a driver while playing in the Nuclear Design Golf League on Sept. 28.

    • Robin Smith recently defeated Jane Barry to win the Mohegan Sun's Ladies Club Championship. Peg Ververis beat Gail Gale in the First Flight.

    • Norwich Golf Course captured the annual Norwich/Shennecossett Challenge on Saturday. The match was played at Norwich.
