Musical Masterworks kicks off 25th season

    Anna Polonsky (Steve Riskind)

The glorious entity known as Musical Masterworks celebrates the start of its 25th season with performances Saturday and Sunday in Old Lyme's First Congregational Church — and the ongoing legacy includes over 100 classical and chamber music presentations performed to more than 15,000 people.

Over the last several years, the outfit has further blossomed under the wizard's stewardship of artistic director/cellist Edward Arron, and the 2015-16 anniversary concerts will include works by Bach, Mozart, Dvorák, Ravel and Bartók — just to name-check some huge names from the repertoire. In characteristic fashion, though, Arron has blended into the mix vibrant contemporary pieces from such composers as Arvo Pärt, John Musto, Giovanni Sollima, and Christopher O'Riley.

This weekend's programs include such heavyweights as Schubert's Piano Trio in One Movement in B-flat Major, D. 28, Schumann's Three Fantasy Pieces for Horn and Piano, Opus 73, and Brahm's Trio in E-flat Major for Piano, Horn and Violin, Opus 40. These will be complemented by works from 21th-century composers David Ludwig (Three Yiddish Dances for Piano, Violin and Cello) and Otto Ketting (Intrada for Solo Horn).

Joining Arron onstage will be pianist Anna Polonsky (her third MM apperance), violinist Bella Hristova and horn player Eric Ruske.

Musical Masterworks, 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, 2 Ferry Road, Old Lyme; $35, $5 for students under 23 with ID; (860) 434-2252, musicalmasterworks.org.
