    Local roundup: East Lyme finishes third in Class M swim meet

    New Haven — Emma Magna and Gretchen Stelter each placed in two individual events to help lift East Lyme High School to a third-place finish in the CIAC Class M swimming and diving championships at Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night.

    The Vikings finished with 473 points, trailing only champion Lauralton Hall (471) and Brookfield (623). Fitch/St. Bernard finished 10th with 207 points and Ledyard was 12th with 155 points.

    Magna, a senior, finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (54.18 seconds) and sixth in the 200 free (1:57.34) while Stelter, a junior, was third in the 50 free (25.33) and sixth in the 100 free (55.83). In addition, senior Anneliese Lapides was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.80) while Jazzy Bazinet won the diving competition last week with 396.40 points.

    East Lyme also placed in all three relay events with the 400 freestyle relay team of Magna, Stelter, Mary Kathryn Taylor and Carlie Biondi finishing third (3:44.20), the 200 medley relay team of Lapides, Victoria Chen, Maeve Counter and Kate Orefice placing fifth (1:56.34) and the 200 free team of Magna, Orefice, Taylor and Strelter also placing fifth (1:42.94).

    For Fitch/SB, senior Lauren Roper placed fourth in the 100 free (55.4) and the 200 free relay team of Roper, Skyler Pearse, Cassandra Cini and Maggie Walrath was sixth (1:45.88). Ledyard had one place-winner with freshman Olivia Strelevitz finishing eighth in the 100 back (1:04.18). 

    Men's basketball

    • A balanced attack carried Coast Guard Academy past Salve Regina 98-89. Reserve Ethan Boose scored 18 points to lead six Bears in double figures. Kevin Alvarez had 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Darius Adams had 12 points while Micah Baldez and Devon Zych (nine rebounds) added 11 points apiece and Luke Daniels had 10 for the Bears (2-0), who overcame committing 19 turnovers. Barrett Hanlon had 29 points for Salve Regina (1-2).

    • Mitchell College trailed by 18 by halftime and never recovered, losing to Albertus Magnus, 99-91, in the Mariners' home opener. Frank Martin had 25 points and nine rebounds while Domenico Santiago had 21 points and nine rebounds and Donavan McClean added 22 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Mariners (1-2). Shontaey Lovell came off the bench to contribute 25 points and 17 rebounds for Albertus (2-0). 

    • St. Thomas More opened its prep school basketball season by beating Rise Academy, 113-65. Omari Spellman led the Chancellors with 24 points and six rebounds while Kai Mitchell had 11 points and 12 rebounds and E.J. Crawford, Charlie Brown and Mike Sagay added 13 points apiece. Arkel Ager had six assists and seven rebounds.

    Girls' soccer

    • The Williams School completed its season with a 7-0 loss to top-seeded MacDuffie School of Granby, Mass., in the NEPSAC Class D tournament. Tori Hersant and Deriyana Carter combined for 13 saves for the Blues, who finished with an 8-7-2 record.
