    Local roundup: Saints' Dowler breaks state career record for pins

    Montville — St. Bernard/Norwich Tech's Matthew Dowler broke the state record for career pins during the Saints' 52-27 loss to Waterford in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division wrestling match on Wednesday night.

    Dowler, wrestling at 138 pounds, pinned his opponent in just 13 seconds for his 122nd career pin, breaking the old state record of 121 set by South Windsor's Casey Mitchell from 2010-14, according to the Connecticut High School Wrestling Record Book. Dowler, a senior, has 182 career wins.

    The Lancers (15-11, 2-4) picked pins from Tyler Radack (113), Noah Concascia (145), Josiah Callender (170), Justin Keating (182) and Ben Pickowitz (195).

    Chris Doran (126) and Robert Newton (220) also had pins for the Saints (14-13, 0-5).

    In other matches:

    • Consecutive pins by Alejandro Paulino (132), Efrain Santiago (138) and Jacques Elissaint (145) lifted New London to a 72-12 victory over Bacon Academy in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division. Luis Rodriguez-Veras (160), Anson Wang (170), George Hidalgo (182) and Billy Clark (195) also had pins for the Whalers (10-4, 3-1).

    • Montville had five wrestlers win by pin in its 60-15 win over Griswold in the ECC Small. Noah Caskey (113), Zach Looney (126), Joel Morth (132), Austin Concascia (145) and Emanuel Diaz (182) won by pin for the Indians (24-4, 4-2).

    • Jacob Foster (106), Brandon Nieto (120), Tim Li (126), Chris Hebert (145) and heavyweight Richard Crooks won by pin for Norwich Free Academy in its 39-33 win over Fitch in the ECC Large. NFA is 6-6, 4-1. Jarod Kosman (113), Wisdom Bedjrah (152), Billy Goff (160), Ryan Koehler (170) and Devon Blais (182) won by pin for the Falcons (9-18, 3-3).

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Sloane Sweitzer had 26 points, 12 rebounds, and eight steals as Old Lyme downed Haddam-Killingworth, 50-43, in the Shoreline Conference. Audrey Gavin scored 11 for Old Lyme (5-11). Tara Murphy scored 16 for the Cougars (6-8).

    • Claudia Pagnozzi-Schwam scored 12 points, had seven rebounds and blocked three shots as Williams School beat Hyde-Woodstock 38-6. Beatrice Mills had 10 points and four steals, Amy Burzin had five rebounds and six steals and Camryn Werbinski had seven rebounds for Williams (3-8).

    • Tabitha Ford scored 23 points as Norwich Tech beat Holy Family in a Constitution State Conference East game, 46-36. Norwich Tech (2-15, 1-9) avenged a 30-28 loss to Holy Family on Jan. 8. Zenaya Sligh scored 16 for Holy Family (1-12, 1-8).

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • O'Brien Tech outscored Norwich Tech 21-10 in the fourth quarter and went on to win the CSC game 69-61. Jared Neal had 22 points and Owen Duff scored 15 for Norwich Tech (7-5).

    • Old Lyme lost to Morgan in a Shoreline Conference game 67-58. Drake Gavin had 18 points and Josh Turkowski and George Doll each scored 13 for Old Lyme (9-5, 8-4).

    • Williams School lost to Rocky Hill School of Rhode Island, 68-49. Zain Alam had 15 points, Nick Bonner scored 14 and Harrison Hall had 12 points for Williams (3-10).    

    Men's basketball

    • Omari Spellman had 15 points and six rebounds as St. Thomas More beat Believe Prep, 99-87. Christian Vital had 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, Julian Betts had 12 points and seven assists, Arkel Ager scored 11 and Ryogo Sumino had 10 points for T-More (21-2).

    • Clark’s John Pisacreta converted a layup with 3.3 seconds left in regulation forced overtime and the Cougars went on to top Coast Guard, 81-74, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Tyler Huffman had 23 points for Clark (6-14, 3-6) and Pisacreta scored 12. Darius Adams had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Bears (9-10, 3-6) and Kevin Alvarez scored 20.

    • Phil Starks scored 28 points, leading Western Connecticut State to an 89-86 win over Connecticut College in a nonleague game. Tyler Rowe had 17 points and seven rebounds, Lee Messier and David Labossiere had 12 points each and Daniel Janel scored 11 for Conn (12-9). 

    Women's basketball

    • Torie Sutherland had her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds as Coast Guard beat Mount Holyoke 68-24 ina nonleague game. Meghan Fornaro had 14 points and six rebounds, Amanda Roy had nine rebounds and Kristina Bynum had five rebounds for Coast Guard (11-8), which won its third straight.

    H.S. hockey

    • Peter Hoffman scored twice and Jake Connelly had a goal and an assist as Farmington Valley beat the NFA/St. Bernard/Bacon/Stonington/Lyman Redhawks, 4-3. Andrew Bannon had a goal and an assist for the Redhawks (5-7) and Maren Lancaster and Logan Morin scored.
