Brush fire burns 3 acres in Waterford

Waterford — A brush fire burned more than three acres of a wooded area off Route 32 between Benham Road and Mamacoke Road Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters from all five Waterford companies and two Montville companies responded to the fire, which was reported at about 12:20 p.m., according to Quaker Hill Fire Company safety officer Greg Kent.

The fire didn’t cause any injuries, and was far from any structures, Kent said.

Firefighters worked for more than two hours to extinguish the fire, which was contained in the wooded tract, a designated natural area within the Connecticut College Arboretum.

Kent said the fire spread quickly in Sunday’s dry weather.

“It was very dry, with a slight wind,” he said. “It was the perfect conditions for a fire like that to travel.”
