    Local roundup: UConn baseball team wins its ninth straight

    Tampa, Fla. — The UConn baseball team ran its winning streak to nine by closing out the regular season with a 3-2 win over South Florida in an American Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

    The Huskies (33-22, 14-9) clinched the No. 3 seed for the AAC tournament and will play No. 6 Memphis at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

    Willis Montgomerie (6-2) picked up the win, allowing five hits over 6.2 innings with six strikeouts and no walks and Patrick Ruotolo earned his ninth save with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

    Bobby Melley drove in two runs, Jack Sundberg had two hits and scored twice and Willy Yahn had two hits for UConn.

    H.S. baseball

    • Austin Prevost hit a walkoff two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh as Bacon Academy beat Fitch 7-5 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division game. Mike Williams was 4-for-4 with two RBI and losing pitcher Hendrick Khoury singled, homered and drove in two runs for Fitch (11-8, 6-4), which lost to Hall 6-5 earlier in the day in the completion of a suspended game.

    H.S. softball

    • Sam Muller had five hits and drove in five runs as Wheeler beat Windham 26-5 in an ECC Small Division game. Micaela Bergel had four hits, drove in three runs and scored four runs and Raven Houck was 4-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored for Wheeler (13-4, 9-0).

    • Kaylie Crosby singled home Alexis Bell in the botom of the seventh inning, leading East Lyme to a 9-8 win over Chariho, R.I. Mikaela Lopriore (12-3) was the winning pitcher, doubled, homered and drove in four runs for East Lyme (15-4). Nicole Bowen and Crosby had three hits each for the Vikings.  

    H.S. girls' tennis

    • New London beat Bacon Academy 6-1 in an ECC Small Division match. Sandrine Etienne, George Anne Amar and Michaela Emile won singles matches for New London (7-8, 7-5) which swept doubles play with the teams of Yesha Patel-Janki Patel, Hadyia Robinson-Cora Sawyer and Alaysia Thomas-Joy Chin Yi Huang. The Whalers can qualify for their second straight state tournament with a win over NFA on Monday.

    • Fitch beat Montville 7-0 in a nonleague match. Laura Krick, Kailey Sullivan, Samantha Cote and Jessica Cote swept singles, losing just three games. The doubles teams of Nina Lupo-Jillian Leger and Pracheta Talati-Crystal Vinoya also won for Fitch (10-5), which received a forfeit and No. 3 doubles.

    • NFA swept doubles en route to a 5-2 win over Windham in a nonleague match. Lauren Jacobs and Tayla Willson won singles matches and the teams of Alyssa Lanphear-Kristina Jacobs, Amanda Taylor-Lauren Bower and Kaelan Greene-Vivian Tang were straight-set winners in doubles for NFA (4-13).

    H.S. boys' tennis

    • New London/Wheeler beat Bacon 4-3 in an ECC Small Division match. Bahaa Hoda and Zack Skrabacz won singles matches for New London (10-6, 8-4) as did the doubles teams of Deyvon Verdini-Bharat Dhyani and Jorge Hidalgo-Nick Hyde.

    • Stonington swept singles play in a 5-2 win over NFA in the ECC Large Division. Jacob Stiger, Mitchell Edwards, Chris Tsang and William Michelson won their matches for Stonington (9-4, 8-4) along with Ryan Sealey and Sean Bessette at No. 1 doubles. The teams of Neil Henostroza-Tim Yuen and Allen Feng-Allen Deng won for NFA (8-9).

    • NFA beat Killingly 5-2 in a nonleague match on Friday. Kevin Huang, Austin Pegram, Allen Deng and Kevin Wu won singles matches for NFA and the team of Tin Yuen and Neil Henostroza won at No. 2 doubles.

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • Fitch finished its season with a 13-10 loss to Bacon in an ECC Large Division game. Luke Letellier had eight goals for Fitch (5-11, 0-8) and teammates Noah Reuling and Riley Jordan also scored.  

    College track

    • Connecticut College's Bella Franz has qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship in the women's 1,500. The junior earned the No. 12 seed with her school-record performance of 4:31.96 in the recent ECAC Championship meet. The nationals will take place May 26-28 at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

    "Bella has had a terrific series of meets this spring," coach Ned Bishop said. "She has been alternating between the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters, and she has scored big points for the team in each of our championship meets. ... Her improvement in the 1,500 meters has been truly significant, as she has run almost eight seconds faster this year than what she ran in 2015."
