    Sun down Stars, 93-90

Mohegan — Once again, the Connecticut Sun performed like the heroine in a summer blockbuster.

The Sun were hurtling towards a cliff Sunday afternoon against the San Antonio Stars. On a bus. That was on fire. And the brakes didn’t work.

Connecticut turned a double-digit lead into an even larger deficit before emerging from the explosion with a 93-90 win before 5,595 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Say this for the Sun — they haven’t been good this season (3-10), but they’ve rarely been dull.

“We’re some hole-diggers,” Connecticut’s Chiney Ogwumike said. “We dig ourselves into some holes, but this time we dug our way out, and it was a great feeling knowing that we can do that.”

Alex Bentley continued trending upwards for the Sun. She made 11 of her 16 shots for 29 points and played the entire game. She didn’t get any rest afterwards as she had to race to a meet-and-greet.

“Comes with the job,” Bentley smiled.

Connecticut point guard Jasmine Thomas came within a rebound of becoming the sixth player in WNBA history to record a triple-double. She had 11 points and a career-high 10 assists with nine rebounds. She also played all but six minutes.

“With (rookie) Rachel (Banham) banged up (sore knee), Jasmine was a warrior,” Sun head coach Curt Miller said. “Not only did she have a great game, but she chased around (UConn rookie) Moriah (Jefferson) and Sydney Colson all night.”

Thomas has been used to the workload because she’s fifth in the WNBA in minutes (33.2).

“I’ve realized that I’m not as old as I think I am,” Thomas said. “There are times that I feel winded, but my body feels fine. I’m just trying to stay healthy. I’m old (26) on this team.”

The bench also rescued the Sun again. Kelly Faris, rookie Jonquel Jones and Chiney Ogwumike all played more — and better — than starters Kelsey Bone, Camille Little, and UConn rookie Morgan Tuck.

Jones had 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals (in 21 minutes), Ogwumike had 12 points and five rebounds, and Faris scored 10.

Kayla McBride was unstoppable for San Antonio (2-9). She made five 3-pointers, shot 69-percent from the floor and scored 25. UConn rookie Moriah Jefferson had 13 points and six assists.

The Sun desperately needed a win to close out their five-game homestand and were playing the only team struggling almost as much as themselves.

Connecticut led, 45-35, with over two minutes left in the second quarter.

San Antonio scored the final 10 points of the half to tie the game.

Faris, Jones and Ogwumike entered the game with the Sun trailing, 49-58, with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

San Antonio’s lead ballooned to 63-51 moments later when Bentley, Faris, Jones, Ogwumike and Thomas began to save the day.

“I wouldn’t even say we kept composed,” Ogwumike said. “I think we just said enough is enough.”

The Sun opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run. Ogwumike started it with a driving hook shot. Jones followed with a steal and a short jumper.

Faris’ 3-pointer tied the game. Thomas’ steal and layup gave the Sun a 75-73 lead with seven minutes left.

The six-foot-six Jones and Bentley made back-to-back 3-pointers to push Connecticut ahead, 86-77, with 3:25 remaining.

“I’m really proud of the fourth quarter effort,” Miller said. “We’ve been here the last five games, and in the last three, we haven’t been able to get to the finish line. We really needed them not necessarily to play harder, but to play smarter.

    “I know they feel better.”
