    Local roundup: New London beats Tolland 6-2 in Legion tournament

    South Windsor — New London won its opener in the Northern Division Super Regionals at the American Legion baseball state tournament, beating Tolland 6-2 on Saturday.

    Pieter Khoury earned the victory, getting a lot of help from his defense in the form of four double plays. Khoury allowed eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Khoury also drove in the first run of the game, driving in Trevor Bolduc on a fielder's choice in the first inning. Cooper Robinson's suicide squeeze bunt drove in a run in the sixth. Tolland made six errors.

    New London plays Rocky Hill/Cromwell/Portland in the double-elimination tournament Sunday at 4 p.m. RCP, the two-time defending state and Northeast Regional champion, beat Avon 3-2.

    Schooners win

    • Richard Slenker (Yale) was 3-for-4, leading the Mystic Schooners to a 4-0 win over the Danbury Westerners in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Slenker hit a two-run single in the third inning.

    Justin Cashman (Hartford) picked up the win. Cashman (1-1) allowed two hits over 5.2 innings, striking out six with one walk. Groton's Aaron Hill (UConn) and Casey Baker (Stony Brook) had RBI singles in the sixth inning for the Schooners (22-13) and Nick Mascelli (Seton Hall) had two hits.

    Tigers lose

    • The West Virginia Black Bears led 7-0 after four innings and went on to beat the Connecticut Tigers 12-3 in a New York-Penn League baseball game.  Will Savage had a two-run single in the fifth inning and Daniel Pinero singled home a run in the ninth for the Tigers (20-15). Joey Havrilak scored twice and Blaise Salter and Pinero had two hits each for the Tigers.

    Sutera tournament (11-12)

    • Pawcatuck beat Groton 4-0 as Brandt Ogden allowed two hits over five innings for the win. Nakhi Snyder had two hits and Matt Pierce singled home a run for Pawcatuck. David Tompkins struck out eight batters and doubled for Groton.

    • Coby Smith and Guiseppie Satti homered as New London beat Montville 2-0. Winning pitcher Kenny Miller struck out seven. Trevor Meaike pitched a two-hitter for Montville and teammate Blake Chapman had two hits.

    Sutera tournament (9-10)

    • Waterford beat Groton 11-10 in a game that featured 19 hits. Jase DiBuono tripled home a run to tie the game and Jaden Peck drove him in with the game-winning run. Donnivan Jameson, Mason Nocery and Caleb Turner had two hits each for Waterford. Luke Lambert had three hits, including two doubles, and Brady Borysewicz tripled for Groton.

    • Jack Hayes and Liam Cochrane combined to pitch a no-hitter  as East Lyme beat New London 12-3. Niall Green had three hits and Alex Dreyfus and Sebby DeCosta had two hits each for East Lyme.
