Drought advisory issued in R.I. to encourage water conservation

Providence (AP) — Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo has issued a statewide drought advisory to encourage water conservation and raise awareness of dry conditions across the state.

The Democrat is issuing the advisory based on advice from the state's Drought Steering Committee. The advisory is the lowest of four drought designations.

The committee falls under the Rhode Island Water Resources Board.

The board recommends refraining from watering the lawn between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., the hottest part of the day, and warns against overwatering.

The board also suggests using pool covers to reduce evaporation when the pool isn't in use, checking the load size when washing laundry or dishes and sweeping driveways, sidewalks and steps rather than spraying them with a hose.

Some water suppliers and communities have issued water restrictions.
