Heartfelt music and charismatic, versatile performers can transcend all sorts of onstage technical problems. That was so effortlessly and beautifully obvious Thursday during The Day’s “Live Lunch Break” concert in New London’s Hygienic Art Park as Ramblin’ Dan Stevens and Clayton Allen and their band put on a wonderful eight song set of authentic rural blues. Think Connecticut by way of the Mississippi Delta.

Yes, it was hot and humid — and the weather played havoc with guitar tunings even BEFORE Allen had amp problems in the latter part of the set. But, with wit and the seasoned professionalism you’d expect of crafty road veterans, the show went on fluidly. And a park-full of happy folks, many of whom probably weren’t particularly familiar with acoustic blues, left the performance committed fans.

Though typically a duo — Stevens and Allen represented Connecticut in the National Blues Challenge competition in Memphis last January — they expanded the parameters and nuances of their songs with empathetic support from pianist/vocalist Kala Farnham and bassist Adam Anderson.
