    Local roundup: St. John pitches Tigers to victory

    Norwich — Locke St. John pitched seven strong innings for the win as the Connecticut Tigers beat the Staten Island Yankees 3-1 on Sunday in a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium.

    St. John (4-7) allowed three hits and one run over seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks. John Hayes pitched a hitless eighth and Bryan Garcia a hitless ninth for his third save.

    The Tigers (34-27) took a 1-0 lead in the third when Jacob Robson singled home Daniel Woodrow. Staten Island (34-26) tied the game in the fifth, but Connecticut regained the lead on the sixth when Robson singled, went to third on an error and scored on a single by Blaise Salter.

    The Tigers, who moved a half-game behind the Yankees in the wild-card race, added an insurance run in the seventh. Hunter Swilling led off with a double, went to third on a single by Will Savage and scored on Woodrow's single.

    Women's soccer

    • Stephanie Ribeiro scored in the 89th minute as UConn beat Boston University 1-0. Emily Armstrong made three saves for UConn (2-0).

    NL-Waterford Speedbowl

    • A pair of 35-lap SK Modified races highlighted a six-race card on Saturday night and Ledyard's Tyler Chadwick and Keith Rocco of Wallingford picked up the wins.

    Rocco also won the 30-lap Late Model race and Chris Meyer of Norwich (Limited Sportsman), Cory DiMatteo of Farmington (SK Light) and Charles Canfield of East Haven (Mini Stock) also won races.

    Chadwick picked up his third win of the season, with Salem's Joe Gada second and Todd Owen of Somers finishing third. Tom Abele Jr. of Norwich was second to Rocco in the second SK Modified race with Matt Galko of Meriden was third. Rocco has six SK Modified wins this season.

    Jim Banfield of Glastonbury was second in the Late Model race and Jason Palmer of Berlin was third. Corey Barry of Plainfield was second and Brett Gonyaw of Vernon third in the SK Light race. Monte Gibbs of Killingworth was second in the Limited Sportsman race, followed by Al Stone III of Durham. Oakdale's Wayne Burroughs was second and Jordan Hadley of Waterford finished third in the Mini Stock race.
