Don't forget patients in hospital's success

Just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the stellar editorial, “The community’s own hospital,” (Sept. 14), addressing Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and its salvation and now potential resurgence toward greatness with new partner Yale. Well done and in keeping with your tradition of editorial excellence!

One community group for supreme thanks, however, was left notably out. As Sir William Osler taught: "He who studies medicine without books sails an uncharted sea, but he who studies medicine without patients does not go to sea at all."

As I prepare to leave my 30 year Orthopaedic practice of art and science, medicine and surgery in this community, it would be well and fitting to remember that through all the turbulence and radical change in the healthcare space, “Our Patients” have remained steadfast, loyal, and trusting of those called to serve, especially to the Lawrence Brothers and Memorial Hospital for over 100 years. And we, "providers of care and caring," could not, and would not, have had meaningful and purposeful professional lives without each and every one of them. I personally salute and thank them!
