    H.S. roundup: Cheney Tech pulls away from Thames River

    East Lyme — Cheney Tech came out and dominated the second half to pull away for a 42-18 victory over the Thames River Crusaders in a Constitution State Conference football game on Saturday at East Lyme High School.

    The Beavers (3-0) scored late in the first half to take a 21-18 halftime lead, then outscored Thames River, a tri-operative program of Norwich Tech, Grasso Tech and St. Bernard, 21-0 in the second half.

    Quarterback Jared Neal ran for 213 yards and a pair of second-quarter touchdowns for the Crusaders (1-2), while Owen Reynolds added 63 yards rushing and a touchdown.

    In other games:

    • Hayden Parrilla rushed for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Stonington rolled to a 26-7 road win over East Lyme on Friday night. Parilla gave the Bears (2-1) a 6-0 lead with a 16-yard run late in the first quarter and increased the advantage to 13-0 with a 1-yard TD run with 6:41 left in the first half.

    David Bibeau extended Stonington's lead to 20-0 with a 1-yard run late in the third quarter (Nate Miller added his second extra point) before Riley Burnside ran three yards for a fourth quarter lead to make it 26-0. Burnside added 72 rushing yards on 12 carries.

    East Lyme is 0-3.

    Field hockey

    • Stonington, playing its second game in less than 24 hours, remained unbeaten with a 2-0 non-conference victory over Avon, its first win over the Falcons since 2012. Trinity Lennon, assisted by Miranda Arruda, gave the Bears (6-0) a 1-0 lead in the first half before Lennon return the favor, assisting on Arruda's insurance goal with 12:05 to play. Avon (3-3) held a 13-10 edge in shots and Stonington goalie Cameron Dreher made 10 saves to earn the shutout.

    Boys' soccer

    • Cole Dirico volleyed home a cross from Trevor Hutchins into the net with seven minutes remaining to give Ledyard a 2-1 comeback victory over Waterford. The Lancers (5-2) led 1-0 courtesy of a Dylan Bosco goal in the 25th minutes, but AJ Genova tied it for the Colonels (2-4) nine minutes later when he blasted a shot into the net from 30 yards out on a direct kick. Garrick Prior made 10 saves in goal Ledyard, which was outshot 23-7.

    • Thomas Skrelja broke a 1-1 tie with in the 21st minute and Newtown went on to hand Old Lyme it first loss, 3-1, in a non-conference match. Graham Aird, assisted by Danny Cole, scored in the 10th minute for the Wildcats (4-1-2), who were outshot 19-6. Goalie Brian Winters made seven saves for Old Lyme while Jack Oltron added one goal and one assist for Newtown (2-2-2).

    • Anthony Abramov's unassisted goal in the 21st minute lifted East Lyme to a 1-0 victory over Fitch in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I match on Friday. Ian Peitzsch earned the shutout in goal for the Vikings (3-2, 3-1) with two saves while Weston Jacey stopped 10 shots for Fitch (2-3, 1-2).

    Girls' soccer

    • Jenna Peduzzi had two goals and an assist as Old Lyme cruised to a 4-0 non-conference victory over Norwich Free Academy. Keelin Hurtt added a goal and an assist for the Wildcats (8-1), Maddie Ouellette scored a goal and Mya Johnson had an assist. Goalie Katherine Pettersen made six saves to earn the shutout while Kayla Tosses stopped 14 shots for NFA (2-2).

    • Mackenzie Northcutt scored three first-half goals as East Lyme cruised to a 6-0 non-conference win over Morgan. Stephanie deLaforcade, who finished with four assists for the Vikings (6-0-1) added a pair of goals in the second have while Berkeley Callaghan also scored and Northcutt also had an assist. Goalie Victoria McCormick earned the shutout with three saves.

    • First-half goals by Camryn Werbinski and Katia Bourganos lifted Williams School to a 2-1 victory over St. Andrew's. Audrey Matson assisted on Werbinski's goal for the Blues.

    H.S. boys' cross country

    • NFA placed fifth in the Varsity 2 race at the 10th annual Ocean State Invitational at Goddard State Park in East Greenwich, R.I. Luke Shea led the Wildcats by placing 29th in 16:57 over the 5K course and was followed by Nick Fitch (31st, 16:58) and Brandon Mehlinger (32nd, 16:59). Montville sophomore Jayden Colon was 88th in the Varsity 1 race in 18:37.

    • Williams finished second in its own five-team Sports Day Invite, totaling 49 ponts. William Jarrett was second in 20:18 to lead the Blues while Colin Madaus was eighth in 21:19, Roman Rios was 11th in 21:50, Hartmut Doerwaldt was 13th in 22:15 and Eli Griswold was 15th in 22:25.

    H.S. girls' cross country

    • St. Bernard finished second in the Varsity Small race at the Wind Trails Invitational in Farmington. The Saints finished with 90 points, trailing only champion Nonnewaug's 63. Senior Ellen Arvidson paced St. Bernard by placing second in 20:08 while Christina McCaffrey (13th, 21:04) and Sophia Duhig (15th, 21:13) also finished in the top 20.

    • Montville's Mady Whittaker was the top local performer in the Ocean State Invitational. Whittaker, a sophomore, ran the fastest time overall among all local competitors, finishing ninth in the Varsity 1 race in 19:55 over 5K, a personal best. She helped lead the Indians to a ninth-place finish in the team standings, ahead of rival Stonington, which was 13th overall and led by Caroline Morehouse, who was 51st in 21:09. In the Varsity 2 race, NFA was 14th and was led by Eve Buckridge, who placed 40th in 20:54.

    • Williams defeated Fishers Island in its annual Sports Day Invitational, finishing with 17 points as Catherine Shannon (23:34), Mary Madaus (23:49) and Sarah Billis (27:27) went 1-2-3 for the Bluues and Grace Burleson (28:14) finished fifth.
