New London — India Pagan’s year to this point already included playing basketball for New London High School in the Class L state championship game and for Puerto Rico at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Women’s Championship in Chile.

    Now this.

Pagan visited Division I Stony Brook (N.Y.) University earlier this week and was offered a spot on the women’s basketball team beginning with the 2017-18 season. She took a night to sleep on it before she called coach Caroline McCombs with a verbal commitment.

Pagan, a 6-foot-2 center, joins fellow New London senior Jada Lucas, the Whalers’ point guard, at the Division I level. Lucas committed to Hartford in June.

“As soon as I walked on campus, I could see myself on the team already,” said Pagan, who plans to major in marine science.

“I’ve been telling everybody, this process is the hardest thing I’ve ever done and it’s all worth it. I found a school that has marine biology, which I love, and I always wanted to play college basketball. I definitely found everything I need to pursue this. … This process brought a different side to me I didn’t know I had.”

Pagan finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds in last season’s Class L title game at Mohegan Sun Arena, as the Whalers fell 51-48 to top-ranked Hartford Capital. New London, playing in its second title game in three years after winning the 2014 Class M championship, finished 25-2.

On the Puerto Rican U18 team, Pagan averaged 8.4 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds in five games. The Puerto Rican team was fourth and qualified for the U19 World Championship next July in Italy. One of her teammates that team, Giolibeth Perez, also plays for Stony Brook.

In the future, Pagan and Stony Brook will match up in the regular season with Lucas and Hartford, with both teams competing in the America East.

“Jada and I were texting and we said this is our last season, let’s go out and win another state championship,” said Pagan, who along with Lucas was a freshman on the 2014 team which won. “We’re committed to go out with a boom.”

“She’s definitely coming into her own,” New London coach Holly Misto said of Pagan. “She’s more comfortable. That’s what happens. They grow up. … Both her and Jada are fun to coach. I think they’ll both have a lot of success at the next level. India had a lot of choices. She was getting overwhelmed. I told her, ‘It’s a stressful time, but it’s a good feeling. Take it in stride. Enjoy the moment.' I’m happy for her.”
