Rhody vocalist Billy Gilman advances on "The Voice"

On Tuesday, Hope Valley, R.I., native

Billy Gilman advanced through the "Knockout Round" on "The Voice," NBC's top-rated vocal competition. He sang

a heart-melting rendition of Rachel Platten's "Fight Song," a tune about resilience and self-belief that certainly echoes the 28-year-old Gilman's own career struggles after huge success as a child star. A member of Team Adam (Levine), Gilman bested teammate Ponciano Seoane, who sang an arrangement of Ed Sheeran's "I See Fire." Next Monday's show will conclude the "Knockout Round" bouts, and Tuesday's episode will spotlight competitors' backgrounds and home lives. Gilman's next singing appearance will be during a live playoff and elimination round Nov. 7.
