3 New London High women coaches provided a wonderful example

In March, my daughter’s New London High basketball team won the championship game in our state’s largest division. The players all seemed to get along on this well-balanced, talented team. Two received Division 1 college scholarships. The school they beat in the championship had an enrollment of nearly 2,100 students, New London a little over 900. The game was played at the Mohegan Sun Arena in front of 8,200 people.

It was a truly remarkable experience, forever to be remembered, and to be built upon.

The most wonderful aspect of this experience relates to leadership and the coaches who left an important impression on my daughter and her teammates. They were tireless in organizing team fundraisers, an overnight trip for the girls, watching long hours of game film, preparing for practices, setting game plans. The coaches were not to be denied in the pursuit of excellence.

They talked to the players and took time to understand their feelings, emotions, and personal situations. The coaches had empathy.

Most importantly, they led by example, showing anything is possible and that stereotypes are meant to be shattered, or better yet, obliterated. This incredible team, in its journey to a state championship, was coached by three smart, caring, and dedicated women. They left in the minds of these young women an indelible impression of hope and empowerment.
