    Around the region

    • Senior Shatajah Wattely, a Montville High School graduate, was selected as the Southern Connecticut State University female athlete of the week. Wattely won the New England title in the 200 meters last weekend, posting an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 23.97 seconds. She also ran a leg on the New England champion 4x400 relay team, leading the Owls to fourth overall.

    • Western Connecticut State University freshman Ryan Reuling, a midfielder from Groton, was selected to the Little East All-Conference second team. He finished with 21 goals and 12 assists.

    • UConn junior co-captain Kevin Foster of East Lyme finished third in the javelin at the American Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships last weekend in Houston. His throw covered 209 feet, one inch, and helped the Huskies place second. He has qualified for the NCAA Regionals starting May 25 in Lexington, Ky.

    • Stonington graduate Elizabeth Morrison, a College of New Jersey junior, was named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Region First Team for the third straight season. Morrison has 43 ground balls, 50 draw controls and 41 caused turnovers for the Lions, who are the nation's top scoring defense. She is the program record holder for career caused turnovers with 150. Morrison had two goals and a team-high six draw controls in the CNJ's 19-6 NCAA Division III tournament second round win over Farmingdale State College. The top-ranked Lions (16-1) will host Mount Union in the third round on Saturday.

    • Fitch graduate Tyler Latham continues to enjoy success as a member of the Central Connecticut State University track and field team. He contributed to the Blue Devils winning their fourth straight Northeast Conference championship earlier this month by winning the javelin (59.95 meters), placing fifth in the long jump (a personal best 7.02 meters) and seventh in the 400 hurdles. At last weekend's IC4A Championship in Princeton, N.J., Latham finished sixth in the javelin at 58.31 meters.

    • Junior Troy Stefanski, a Wheeler graduate, has appeared in 43 games with 25 starts for the UConn baseball team. He's batting .242 with six RBI for the Huskies (28-22, 12-9), who reside in fourth in the AAC standings behind leaders South Florida (39-12, 13-8), Central Florida (36-16, 13-8) and Houston (33-18, 13-8).

    • At the University of Rhode Island, Norwich Free Academy graduate Dyshelle Pemberton, a senior, won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.92 at the All-New England Championships last weekend in Williamstown, Mass. She also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team that took fourth. In the men's competition, Joseph Carter, a junior from Ledyard, finished fifth in the 100 meters (10.82), helping the Rams capture their 19th New England title.

    • Mercy College junior outfielder Morgan Lloyd, an East Lyme graduate, earned a spot on the 2017 Division II Conference Commissioner Association (CCA) All-East Region First team. She batted an East Coast Conference leading .436 with two home runs and 29 RBI and helped Mercy qualify for the NCAA tournament. In two NCAA games, she went 2-for-5.

    • Stonington graduate Gabi Hoops, a goalie for the women's soccer team, was recently honored at WPI's annual awards banquet. Hoops received The Carolyn McCabe Award, which goes to the sophomore female athlete who best exemplifies the high standards expressed in the WPI Athlete. Hoops was the program's first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference defensive player of the year last fall, earned all-conference second team and NSCAA All-New England second team status. She led the league in save percentage, fewest goals (seven) and goals against average (0.34).

    Quantique White, a sophomore pitcher from New London, is a member of the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team that earned an NCAA Division II tournament bid. He's appeared in 17 games this season, all in relief, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.29 earned run average. Avery Point graduate Kyle Hart, a senior outfielder, is batting .326 with 12 doubles and 26 RBI. SCSU (27-14-1) plays St. Thomas Aquinas Thursday in the first round at Manchester, N.H.

    Camel highlights

    • Connecticut College senior swimmer Valerie Urban was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District II At Large first team. Urban capped off her career with an eighth-place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III Championships, earning All-American honors. Urban was recognized as a Winthrop Scholar, the highest academic honor bestowed by Conn. She is a three-time selection to the New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Academic team.

    Tracking the Bears

    • The Boston Storm, a member of the United Women's Lacrosse League, recently drafted Coast Guard Academy's Mary Heneberry, who just completed her first season as women's lacrosse head coach for the Bears. Heneberry played college lacrosse at Loyola University and made the All-Big East Conference second team. During her senior year, she helped the Greyhounds win the Big East tournament championship and reached the NCAA tournament quarterfinals in 2011.

    "I'm grateful for the opportunity to play with, and against, such competitive athletes again," Heneberry said in a release. "Women's lacrosse is such an important part of my life, and I'm lucky to extend my playing career while being a part of such a historical time in women's lacrosse."
