Isaiah Whaley officially became the newest member of UConn's basketball incoming recruiting class when his signed national letter of intent arrived in Storrs.

A 6-foot-9, 190-pound forward, Whaley played at Mt. Zion Prep in Baltimore last season, averaging about 21 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. He gave the Huskies an oral commitment last week after an official visit to the Storrs campus.

"Isaiah is a long, active player who will bring us great energy," UConn coach Kevin Ollie said in a released statement. "He gives us some more depth on the front line and I look forward to him coming in and fighting for playing time during his freshman year."

Whaley, who's from Gastonia, N.C., spent one year at Mt. Zion, helping the prep school program post a 27-10 record. He previously spent three years at Ashbrook High School and his senior year at Evelyn Mack Academy in Charlotte.

Mt. Zion coach Roderick Harrison said of Whaley: "Isaiah has a skill set that is off the charts, especially for a player of his size. He is really mobile around the basket, but he can step out and make jump shots. On defense, he can guard guards as well as the bigger guys.

"The main thing for him at the college level will be to put on weight and gain strength. He's a great kid and will work hard. With the people at UConn who can help him develop, he can be a very good player."

Whaley is part of a five-player recruiting class that also includes guard Antwoine Anderson, a graduate transfer from Fordham; junior college transfer Eric Cobb, a forward; Josh Carlton of Winterville, N.C., and Tyler Polley of Miramar, Fla., a pair of forwards.
