Police, firefighters rescue 1 from Groton house fire

Groton — A Groton Town police officer rescued an older man from a house fire at 62 North Road Wednesday evening and Poquonnock Bridge firefighters rendered aid, Fire Chief Joseph Winski said.

The unidentified man was transported to the hospital by Groton Ambulance with injuries that did not appear life-threatening, Winski said. He said the man's daughter was trying unsuccessfully to get her father out when police and firefighters arrived.

"They made a grab and got him," Winski said. "They did a fantastic job."

One firefighter was slightly injured and was treated at the scene, Winski said.

The single-family house sustained fire, heat and smoke damage, Winski said, and is uninhabitable. The Red Cross is assisting the family of three residents in the home, the chief said.

In addition to Poquonnock Bridge, crews from Groton City, Mystic, Old Mystic, the Naval Submarine Base, Lawrence +Memorial Hospital medics and Groton Ambulance responded.
