    Chapin Sisters bring the folk

Lily, left, and Abigail Chapin channel the Everly Brothers in their new CD.

When the daughters of Grammy award-winning folksinger Tom Chapin were old enough to understand what Dad did for a living, he only asked them one thing. “If you want to follow me into the music biz,” the Old Man said, “go for it. But PLEASE don’t do any kind of folk. I HATE competition — particularly from my own family members. I’ll go for your throat!” Chapin then bought his daughters electric guitars and the complete catalogs of Judas Priest and Meshugga and told them to “think dark metal.”

Alas, that’s not how it worked out, Pop.

The Chapin Sisters — Tom’s daughters Abigail and Lily Chapin — are an utterly enjoyable folk/pop act with wonderful harmonies, confectionary choruses and cleverly witty lyrics. They perform in New London as headliners at the Friday Night Folk series at New London’s All Souls UU Congregation.

The Chapin Sisters latest album, “A Date With the Everly Brothers,” is not a literal account of an evening out with Phil and Don, which is good because A) the age differences between Phil/Don and Lily/Abigail is extreme to say the least, and B) Phil is dead. Instead, it’s a gorgeous and heartfelt musical homage.
