Peter Frampton and Cheap Trick explore their rich musical histories Sunday at Foxwoods

In 1981, after his huge tsunami of fame had crested and Peter Frampton was supplanted by younger and fresher folks — it's always that way — he released a very good album called "Breaking All the Rules," which featured one of the finest songs of his career, "Dig What I Say."

In the context of that year's big records — Foreigner, Stevie Nicks, The Police and certainly Journey — "Breaking All the Rules" sorta went under the radar. The point? Success and the marketplace and public opinion are all interconnected and fickle — but the Artists keep plugging along and, frequently, continue to crank out excellent work whether anyone pays attention or not.

Frampton and Cheap Trick appear in a double-headline bill Sunday in the Grand Theater at Foxwoods. By demand, I suspect both of these world-class acts will churn out plenty of hits. But it would be fun if each focused at least part of their set lists on obscurities. I'll bet fans might be surprised at the hidden cache of greatness. And Pete? Don't remotely be afraid to play "Dig What I Say." It freakin' rocks.
