Banding together: Coast Guard Band plays Sunday

    Don't go, Coast Guard Band!

As plans are being discussed about possibly moving our beloved U.S. Coast Guard Band to Washington, D.C., the group is continuing to play its wonderful (and free) concerts here. The latest is Sunday afternoon at the Coast Guard Academy's gorgeously renovated Leamy Hall.

Part of the program honors the Strausses, featuring the likes of Johann Strauss' "Blue Danube," Richard Strauss' "Feierlicher Einzug," and George Gershwin's "By Strauss." Musicians 1st Class Tom Brown and Chris Lane perform "Reanimations" for solo trumpets, and soprano soloist Musician 1st Class Megan Weikleenget sings the Korngold "Glück, das mir verblieb" aria, arranged by Musician 1st Class Robert Langslet.

So go, support the band and whoop it up.

U.S. Coast Guard Band, 2 p.m. Sunday, Leamy Hall, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 15 Mohegan Ave., New London; free; (860) 701-6826.
