    Business in Brief - April 19

    At the 142nd Annual Meeting held on March 25, Kevin C. Merchant, president and CEO of Jewett City Savings Bank, announced the retirement of Dr. Eric L. Moore from the Board of Directors.

    Moore began his service with the bank as a corporator in 1998 and served as a board member from 2000 to 2015. He served on many board committees and was instrumental in helping guide the bank’s investment committee, which he chaired for the last decade.

    Merchant also announced the election of Brian A. Andstrom to the Board of Directors. Abroker associate with the Partner Network since 2008, Andstrom is also a partner of B.E.B.E. Company, a land development company. He has extensive experience in residential, commercial, industrial, and construction real estate, which he gained early in his career with the Petrowsky Real Estate Company, a firm he later owned and merged with Realty World Quintal prior to joining the Partner Network.

    The Light House is partnering with Arthur Murray Dance Centers, 287 Main St., Niantic, for a "Light It Up Blue" event at 7:15pm on Friday, April 24 to support Autism Awareness Month.     Join the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT for the grand reopening celebration of Atria Crossroads Place,1 Beechwood Drive, Waterford, from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 23. Atria's assisted living facility has just completed multi-million dollar renovations to their community and Life Guidance Memory Care spaces. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the new areas; hear a presentation by Atria's partner, author and Alzheimer's expert David Troxel; and be able to take home a signed copy of his book "A Dignified Life: The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care, A Guide for Family Caregivers."     Subaru of America, Inc. donated $10 million to charitable partners during its seventh annual "Share the Love" event. Since the inception of the program,Subaru has donated over $50 million. Sails Up 4 Cancer (SU4C) has been chosen as one of this year's charities for their campaign. Holmgren Subaru, in Franklin, donated $250 for every new vehicle sold earlier this year.

    United Parcel Service has recently announced Parcel Center, Inc. in Westerly as a 2014 Top Shipper Facility. The award was presented to Arthur and Zita Kachadourian on April 8. The Top Shippers Program was started by UPS in 2005, to recognize the Top 100 out of more than 5,000 participants. PCI has earned the designation every year of the program's existence.     Lake of Isles' North Course, a Rees Jones design, was voted No. 1 in Connecticut on Golfweek's 2015 state-by-state list of "Best Courses You Can Play." This is the North Course's ninth consecutive appearance as No. 1 in the state. Lake of Isles is owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Nation, which also owns Foxwoods Resort Casino.

    Archie Cart, Lake of Isles, general manager, said the North Course is a par-72 layout that stretches more than 7,300 yards from the championship tees. The North Course is open to guests of Foxwoods Resort Casino and daily-fee golfers.

    The Eastern Connecticut Association of Realtors Inc. is offering the 60-hour real estate pre-licensing course “Principles & Practices” for those interested in obtaining a real estate salespersons license. This course is taught on a revolving schedule and allows participants to join during any week. Week 1 will be on May 9.

    The cost of the course is $490, which includes the textbooks and the course exam. Each session is made up of 12 classes and each class is taught independent from the other classes.     Through “The Lighthouse Project,” the employees of Smith Insurance presented a check for $1,935 to Alliance for Living of New London. The collection was the result of a two-month campaign involving dress down Fridays, half day-off raffles and a Valentine’s Day contest. The Lighthouse Project was formed in 2011 to oversee community partnership and has since raised over $40,000 for local non-profits.

    John W. Rafal, Founder and Vice Chair, Patrick Gingras, Vice President, and Robert Paolucci, CFP, Vice President of Essex Financial Services, located in Essex, attended the seventh-annual Barron’s Top Independent Advisors Summit. The invitation-only conference was held at the Fairmont Princess Hotel March 23-25 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

    Many of the Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors in the U.S., as ranked and published in Barron’s Aug. 23, 2014 issue, were in attendance. This annual ranking is the basis for the Top Independent Advisor’s Summit and the advisors are chosen based on the volume of assets overseen by the advisors and their teams and the quality of the advisors’ practices.

    The Guide includes chapters on senior care options, care planning, continuing care retirement communities, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. It has a helpful chapter on government programs that help pay for care.
