    Foxwoods recycling cigarette butts

Since November, Foxwoods Resort Casino has sent more than 716,000 cigarette butts to TerraCycle Inc., a Trenton, N.J.-based company that specializes in the repurposing of hard-to-recycle postconsumer waste. For every pound of cigarette waste Foxwoods recycles through TerraCycle’s Cigarette Waste Brigade, $1 is donated to the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut.

“We take great pride in developing a ‘green’ business and reducing our footprint in the environment," Chris O'Connell, Foxwoods' vice president of development and resort services, said.

The nonprofit Keep America Beautiful reports that cigarettes are the most littered item in the world, with 65 percent of them disposed of improperly.
