Opponents of natural gas expansion project to rally in Willimantic

The group Connecticut Against Fracking will host a rally from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday to oppose to Spectra Energy’s projects to bring natural gas from Marcellas Shale deposits in Pennsylvania through the state.

The rally will take place at Spectra Energy’s meter and regulating station at 247 South St., Willimantic. The company’s Algonquin Incremental Market project, one of three the company is involved in, will impact several towns throughout the state including Montville, according to Martha Klein, volunteer communications chairwoman with the Connecticut chapter of the Sierra Club. The Sierra Club is one of the groups involved in the opposition to expanding supplies of natural gas from fracking fields into Connecticut.

Klein said that about half of the gas that will travel through the state with the new pipeline projects will ultimately be shipped to Canada for overseas export. The Sierra Club and other groups are also concerned that the push to add new natural gas customers in the state will create more methane emissions, and will increase global warming, she said, undercutting progress toward renewable energy.

Marylou Hanley, spokeswoman for Spectra Energy, said the work in Montville is underway. It includes modifications to an existing metering station and construction of 1.2 miles of 12-inch pipeline loop. The project will benefit consumers, she said.

“It will bring significant and diverse domestic natural gas supplies into the New England region to provide homes and businesses with more affordable, environmentally friendly source of energy,” she said.
