Mohegan Sun to host 3-day collector car auction next year

For three days next June, Uncasville will be a mecca for the planet’s car lovers — a veritable hub, if you will.

Barrett-Jackson, the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based organizer of “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions,” announced over the weekend that it will host its first-ever Northeast event June 23-25 at Mohegan Sun. The announcement came at the end of Barrett-Jackson’s final 2015 auction, which concluded Saturday at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas after sales totaling more than $26.9 million.

“It’s a great fit for us,” Bobby Soper, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority president, said Monday. “We strive to provide experiences that our guests cannot enjoy anywhere else. This is another example of that.”

Soper said Barrett-Jackson, which has been trying to find a suitable Northeast location for years, approached Mohegan Sun officials about a year ago, attracted by the casino's proximity to Boston and New York, its 10,000-seat arena and the amenities it offers.

“We expect 40,000 to 60,000 people over the three days,” Soper said, adding that he expects some 700 to 800 cars to be auctioned.

Barrett-Jackson events typically feature interactive automotive displays, test drives and large numbers of vendors and exhibitors.

Founded in 1971, the company typically auctions cars four times a year in Scottsdale; Palm Beach, Fla.; and Reno and Las Vegas, Nev. At last week's Las Vegas event, which capped one of Barrett-Jackson's most successful years, 98 percent of the vehicles available for purchase sold. Top sales included a 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88, which went for $330,000; a 2005 Ford GT ($291,000) and a 1966 Ford Fairlane 500 R-Code ($275,000).

The sale of three vehicles donated by carmakers raised $750,000 for charity.

Coverage of the Mohegan Sun auction will be broadcast live on the Velocity and Discovery cable television networks.

“An event in the Northeast allows us to cover the four corners of the country and also more easily cater to global clients,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and chief executive officer of Barrett-Jackson. “We expect this (Mohegan Sun) event will rival our Las Vegas auction for total number of cars consigned, bidders, visitors, TV viewers and exhibitors.”
