Moe's Southwest Grill coming to Marcus Plaza in Norwich

Norwich – The owners of the Marcus Plaza on West Main Street plan to add a Moe's Southwest Grill restaurant to the front right corner of the parking lot at the Norman Road intersection.

Sikon Development Corp. – formerly Konover Development Corp. – submitted plans to the city zoning office for the a 5,000-square-foot building that would house a Moe's restaurant and a Verizon wireless retail store, said company Vice President Greg Konover. Marcus Plaza is anchored by Shop Rite Supermarket and a TJ Maxx department store.

The company received approval in 2010 for an 8,500-square-foot restaurant building in the corner of the parking lot. The original plan called for Five Guys to be the tenant, but the restaurant opened at a different spot on Route 82.

Konover said the new plan shrinks the size of the building to suit Moe's needs and adds a small retail space.

The building location also was shifted slightly – about 10 feet – from the edge of the parking lot to avoid the West Main Street-Norman Road intersection, where one of six proposed traffic roundabouts would be located if a major reconstruction of the busy commercial strip goes forward.

The state Department of Transportation would need to take a small portion of the property based on the current preliminary design for the roadway. The DOT last summer unveiled the major reconstruction plan that would eliminate red lights for the six roundabouts and would install a median divider to eliminate left turns.

“We did shift the building about 10 feet,” Konover said. “We're still within the original 8,500 footprint, and we're going to do our best to stay out of the way of what might be a DOT taking.”

Konover said he hopes to obtain a zoning permit this week and building permits in the near future to start construction within the next 90 days, with the building ready to open in early to mid-2017.
