UPDATED: Mohegan Sun posts year-over-year gain in July slots revenue
Mohegan Sun’s slot-machine winnings in July were up 4.6 percent over the same month last year, while Foxwoods Resort Casino’s slots “win” was down by less than 1 percent.
Win is the amount of wagers a casino keeps after paying out prizes.
Mohegan Sun’s win for the month totaled $54.0 million. Foxwoods’ was $44.2 million.
The casinos benefited from an extra weekend this July, which had five Saturdays and five Sundays. Last July had four Saturdays and four Sundays.
Both casinos posted year-over-year increases in “handle,” the total amount of slots wagers, in July. At Mohegan, handle was $668.7 million, a 5.8 increase, while Foxwoods’ $563.3 million handle was up 1.8 percent.
Mohegan Sun sent $13.5 million of its July win to the state. Foxwoods’ contributed $11.3 million.
Foxwoods posted a quarterly report last week that showed its gaming revenue for the three months that ended June 30, excluding free slots play, totaled $173.2 million, an 8 percent decrease over the same three months the previous year. Nongaming revenue, from restaurants and bars, hotels and entertainment, was $50.8 million, a 5.8 percent decline.
Foxwoods’ net income, or profit, for the quarter was $10.3 million, down nearly 30 percent over the $14.7 million profit it reported for the same quarter in 2015.
In Massachusetts, gaming regulators on Monday released the July slots report for Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, providing the first year-over-year comparison in the history of the facility, which opened June 24, 2015.
Plainridge Park won $13.9 million last month, a 23.6 percent decrease over the $18.2 million it won in July 2015.
After posting robust numbers in its first two full months of operation, Plainridge Park had won between $11 million and $13.5 million for 10 straight months. It’s total for July was the highest of any month since August 2015.
