Casinos' slots 'win' declined in August
Both of southeastern Connecticut’s casinos reported Thursday that their slot-machine winnings last month were down slightly over August 2015 totals.
Foxwoods Resort Casino “won,” or kept, $41.9 million in August slots wagers after paying out prizes, 1.4 percent less than the $42.5 million it kept the same month last year.
Mohegan Sun’s win for the month totaled $50.6 million, down 2.7 percent over August 2015, when it won $52 million.
Differences in the calendar made for a difficult comparison: August 2015 had five Saturdays and five Sundays while August 2016 had four Saturdays and four Sundays. The casinos typically do much of their business on weekends.
Foxwoods has now reported year-over-year declines in slots win for four consecutive months. Mohegan Sun recorded a 4.6 percent gain in July, after reporting declines in May and June.
As for “handle,” the total amount of slots wagers, Foxwoods’ was down less than 1 percent in August to $527.1 million. Mohegan Sun’s handle was down 4.4 percent to $610.8 million.
Foxwoods paid $10.6 million of its August win to the state. Mohegan Sun remitted $12.6 million.
Also Thursday, Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, Mass., reported that it kept $13.1 million in slots wagers in August, a 13.9 percent decline over the $15.2 million it won in August 2015.
The facility opened in late June 2015.
